Help Knock Sensor
Ok after doing my homework on this site I have concluded that I have a bad Knock Sensor. I am going to replace both as soon a possible but I have two questions.
1. I have a 1998 z, I called all the part stores in my area and they all showed two kinds of knock sensors one with a locating grove and one with out a locating grove. Does anyone know which one of these my car takes?
2.On a lot of the posts conserning this issue most people said that they should not cost more than 25 dollars. The parts stores I talked to quoted me around 40 is there a place where these persons are getting them for cheap?

You want to get the '99 and up knock sensors, plus you need the harness to go with them.
You could probably get them a little cheaper at gmpartsdirect.com, but $40. is a pretty good price actually--cheaper than dealerships.

Yes, they are better. The '98's suffered from a constant 4* of knock retard, so the new sensors are the solution to that problem.
You screw them in exactly the same, but you need a matching harness because the '98 harness will not work with the new sensors.

don't go to the autoparts stores, get them from GM.
Predator, I purchased the 99+ sensors using the PN you provided, but oddly enough, I had those sensors. btw, i'm a last production 98 6/98. Perhaps GM already switched over by then.

How was the car running (knock retard) before throwing the code? I really don't know how to tell except for taking off the intake and looking. To me, and if it was me, I don't think it matters either way. If I'm going through the trouble of yanking the intake, I would do the GM TSB (creating a silicone dam around the sensors and removing the foam under the intake) and installing two fresh sensors and a new harness. I destroyed my original harness trying to disconnect the knock sensors, plus it was very funky looking and worn.
It definitely best to spring for the new sensors and harness whether you have the old sensors or the new ones. JMHO.

My stock knock sensors had the same 99+ part number of the new ones I put in, the harness had the same connectors. Also I've never had the presistant KR problems that 98's are known for. All I can figure is that since it was such a late production 98 that the switch had already been made.

dont know exactly how the car was running as far as KR but it was running consestent 13.65 at bout 103 then the trouble code ran 13.80. Used an autozone scan revealed knock sensor bank 1 low voltage. I then used my roomates vcm scan from hpt. It was reading a lot of knock but no audiable noise even used the girlfriends stethoscope to listen. I figured it would show both trouble codes if the harness was bad. Guess its better to replace all while the intake is off
