160 T.stat and handheld programmer question

160 T.stat and hand held programmer ques...
Can i just plug in a buddies hand held programmer to get the fans to come on earlier if i get a 160 t.stat or do i need a true tune to get it to work right?
I tried a search but couldnt find my answer.... so before u guys say anythin...

gotcha, ok.
So after doing a lot of reading, if i get the 160 degree tstat, i NEED the tune so i can get the fans to come on earlier right? If i dont get the tune (or manual switch) will the stat still make a difference?

it will make a diff if its 30 deg out and you are on the highway lol but no you wanna turn the fan temps down. coolant is only as cool as you make it. with a 160 stat it will be open as soon as the car gets that hot and prob never close. so the coolant will be hot
