a tap help I had to buy the USB to serial adapter to get it to work ( no serial port ). I installed the adapter and a-tap and it still says no com port found. <img src="images/icons/confused.gif" border="0"> How do I get it to look at this so that I can use a-tap?

Re: a tap help What OS is your computer running? I had a similar problem w/mine... new laptop but no serial port so I had to buy the Belkin USB to Serial adapter. Works fine w/windows version but it wont work with DOS. My problem is that my laptop is running windows XP and there isn't DOS Support for windows XP yet (from belkin) and since it's not a physical serial port (not using 3E8, 2E8, 3F8, 2F8 or the standard IRQs) it wont work w/out a driver for DOS.

Re: a tap help Horist, me and 98 Beast Z met at the Holley plant tour and by the way nice car. Our laptop is a HP pavilion ze1110 with windows XP. We are having trouble with trying to run the windows version. Haven't tried DOS yet. How is it that we go into the BIOS and turn on the USB port?

Re: a tap help What brand name adapter did you buy? Did you order it direct from Auto Tap?
The reason I ask is that some usb to serial adapters are palm pilots, etc. and won't work for regular serial port

Re: a tap help I got it off this board actually. Ryan (moderator) sold it to me cause nobody around here had one. He says it worked with a-tap for him, but I can't get it to do anything. I installed it and everything but the a-tap screen still comes up no com port. We are about ready to give up and just trade in this laptop and take the 15% loss <img src="gr_sad.gif" border="0">

Do you have something else to test the serial port with? Maybe a serial mouse? If that works, it is probably the cable. I had a fucked up cable for like 2 months, trying all sort of s/w and different computers. My problem was my cable had a loose connection that was intermittent, that made it harder to troubleshoot.

I am new to this board but old to LS1.com....
All laptops are a little different (unfortunately) when it comes to getting into the BIOS at start-up.....Look in the computers manual that came with it, probably under the emergancy section for re-installing the software. There should be a combination of keyboard entries that get you into the BIOS when you first push the on button in there. Mine said something like...."When you hit the start button hold down the 'F5' key and the BIOS setup menu will appear".... But it would be just as easy to first plug in a USB mouse and see if it is recognized.....this would tell you if the USB port is working....And I agree with an earlier post, I have the Belkin adaptor and it came with a set-up disk (Although Windows may have its own driver it should have tried to load when you plugged the adaptor in for the first time).
You may need to get a different adaptor that states for USB to Seriel which EASE sells (ease scantool software...like A-Tap) or even some of the electronics mail-order outlets (I have a catalog at home and do not remember the companies name) Private e-mail me to remind me and I will search it out....
