Default HYPERTECH POWER 3

When Power Programmer is installed it says to listen for pings (detonation) in you engine. What exactly does this sound like? I thought I was Hearing it so I programmed it back to stock, and still hear it. Did anyone else ever have this problem? My Mods have so far been a 160 degree therm. Borla exaust system, Max airflow sensor, KN airfilter, max flo air box, Y-pipe. I just put in the Max Airflo sensor, could that be a issue? What is the temperature reading on the dash with the power programmer installed and a 160 therm. My is staying at around 200 degrees, is this normal? Any help would be appreciated.

Well I think I am hearing it when Car is in first gear and going around 5 - 10 miles per hour. I thought you were only suppose to hear pinging when you accelerate hard. Then I don't hear it anymore in second gear.

If you are hearing it at 5 to 10 mph i doubt it is a ping that you are hearing. I have the hypertech program in my car with the 160 stat and get a slight ping between 5000 to 6000 rpms on hot days (air temp above 90). On days when it gets that hot i just take it easy on the car and short shift well before 5 grand.

Thanks For all the help. For future trouble shooting i wen ahead and got the scanmaster and the maft. Because I plan on doing more mods. I am not sure that is was a ping either. I wentt ahead and took off the power tune and the mass air sensor and just about everything else i had modified on the car. The onlt thing that was left that i added that was left was the Borla exhaust and I sill heard the same noise. So whatever it is after taking off the mods and going back to factory it did not change. Thanks for the help. Adding y-pipe and mass airflow bellow kit this week. I should aslo have the scanmaster to see what issues i am having if any, again thanks for the help justin and dlatwood.

Another question:

I found that with powertuning "activated" all was well - no pinging of any kind with premium fuel.

With the HPP3 one may adjust the max engine RPMs from 5,500 to 6,600, with 6,000 being stock.

I put it to 6,200 and am happy . . . I hear no valve clatter or pinging. The heads, valve train, and cam are all stock.

Also set the Cooling Fan On/Off Temperatures - for a 160 thermo.

My question is at what max rpm may our LS1s be set at without the risk of valve clatter? It's my understanding that if that happens, the valve train deteriorates. What about 6,400? LoL

It really depends on what the conditions of the tolerances are in your valvetrain. When my valvetrain was stock, I had valve clatter near the stock limiter 5500 - 6000. FYI my valvetrain crapped out at 32k.

Pushing the limits of the stock valvetrain is living on borrowed time IMO.

Thanks, NoGo! I appreciate the dangers of valve float, but figured, you only live once. Will put it back down to stock - 6,000 rpm. It sure felt healthy though and, "I hear nuttin". Perhaps, if I had a stethoscope.
