If it's old you might want to keep an eye on it.

I had that with my 99 when I had about 22,000 miles on it. If the car had sat for a couple days the gauges would sweep the first time I started it and the trip would zero itself.
I hadn't modded the car yet and took it into the dealer and they had to work with GM for a new gauge console. Car was in the shop for over a week. It was covered by my warranty.

I assumed the battery was low and charged it up. After a while I was able to get it to start. I moved the car in the garage and thought I needed a battery. I then let it sit for a few days and it started every time I tried.
I figured I needed a battery as I still had the original one (99").
The funny thing was that every other time I started it the tach and speedometer would peg and slowly go back down.
I thought, This must have happened to someone else before and searched and found this thread. I bought a new battery and the tach and speedo have been normal since!
