Default Help! SES P1614

Driving along yesterday, and the SES light pops on. Go to Autozone and hook up the OBII scanner. It pulls this code, P1614, and is "Loss of RIM serial data". Any ideas? Part of the AIR system, I guess. I've searched a LOT, to no avail.

Don't see that code in my helms, obdii.com says it for a "9" engine on their site. Sure it wasn't P1416? It's a lot more common and usually just a gunked up passenger side AIR check valve.

Where is that check valve located?

Double check the code first - the passenger side air check valve is in between the metal air pipe coming off the header, then connects to the air hose - it's the black disc shaped valve right above the #4 cyl coil pack. If that's it - easy to replace yourself, GM PN is 12565503 but available at your local parts store and not expensive.

I'll get it re-scanned at the Zone tonight. It's popssible the guy flipped the code #'s. Thanks for all the help, especially giving me the location of the check valve!

Thought that might be the case - after replacement light should go off by itself after a few cold starts, but will stay in history for 40 cycles, unless you reset it. Auto Zone is great for reading codes for free - but always watch over their shoulder and write them down yourself.

Yeah. I keep telling myself I need to just bite the bullet, and by a scanner for the house. This may be what convinces me to do so. Thanks again!

^^^ I don't know this for sure as I've never used a cheap non GM OBDII scanner... but P0 codes are the ones that the government mandates must be released to everyone

P1 codes are manufacturer specific (at least that's my understanding... again I may be wrong)

cheapie code scanners may not be able to read the P1 codes (and likely won't be able to read B/C etc... codes)

I think you are correct on this. That's the reason I haven't bought one. The good ones are a litttle pricey, but I'm looking for one as we speak, via internet.
