Real-time tuning for 98' LS1?
This thread is about segment swapping for the trans segment. The same principle applies, only in your case you would swap the fuel segment.
I don't know of any other tuning suite that gives you the power to do that.
In your case from the first EFI Live forum thread I cited if your desire is to upgrade your 98 Fbody to a newer pcm then you could use a 02 Express Van's fuel segment (same OS's) and get your fuel gage to work without swapping the cluster.

What about HP Tuners? Can someone tell what is needed to use it's real-time tuning?
You get what you pay for when you buy a Road Runner that has a seperate emulator card controlling the GM pcm. Anything can be changed at anytime. There is nothing like it for GM LS1's. Yes, you have to buy a piece of hardware and yes you have to take the time to install it prior to use. You can load any supported GM OS/calibration including FREE Custom Operating Systems to it without having to buy any other licenses other than the one you buy for it-one time deal. Note, I am not hiding the fact that once you finish a tune and save it to your laptop if you want to load it to a stock pcm you will have to license it.
This is a completely different approach than using "unused" pcm memory to perform a limited amount of changes on the stock pcm it'self. This is a less expensive way of doing things however, every "new" vehicle you approach to tune, you need more credits up front.
I believe the standard HP Tuners response for the 98 swap is they have a custom OS for it that you cannot do realtime changes to at all because of the really limited memory on the 98 pcm it'self.
My question is can you run/control a 4L80e with the HPT custom 98 OS. I am not trying to be an *** about this I just think that an individual that is serious enough to run a custom 98 OS could be in the market for a 4L80e.
Think of it this way, the last killer video game you bought...did you even bother with the idea of just running the minimum system requirements?

This is a writeup i did on my PCM swap on my Corvette, the basic principles of the swap on a F-Body is the same as the vette, just the PCM is in a different location so hopefully this will give you an idea with pictures of what needs to be done.
As Doc posted above me, you will need EFI Live to do this, and youll need a tuner strong in the ways of the EFI, i was lucky enough to have Doc himself tune my car and spearhead the completion of this swap.
Heres the link, i hope it helps, if you have any questions at all feel free to PM me and ill try to help.
Computer swap
One of the things you have to do to make this work is swap in that fuel segment from an 02 express van into your new OS, HP Tuners is not capable of performing this swap.
The other HP roadblock is apparantly when you input a 97 or 98 vin into the tune HP will automatically will write 97-98 cal tables into the tune, wich obviously is not what you want to do, and from what i understand there is no way around this. With EFI Live you can input any VIN and you still have full control of what cal tables you use.
Your saying a valid vin for the OS you are using, a 97-98 vin would not be valid for an 02 OS would it, so how would this work? Or am i misunderstanding?
As far as the segment swap, i havent been able to find a 02 express van cal in HP format, does one exist so this could be performed. And your saying that the big guy in the sky at HP can swap these segments, but the end HP user (tuner) cannot right, becouse i happen to know some people (IE Shop owners) have called HP about swapping segments for them and they were turned away saying they do not do this, this was for fuel segment swapping, and swapping trans segments for 4L80E retrofits.
