Ping under slight throttle?
I can put a edit file in with less timing and it goes away, but the one with a little more and it starts up. Sometimes it does it bad, and others it doesnt.Thw weird thing is it doesnt start doing it mainly unless I have driven the car for over 20mins? weird?any ideas? i take ping is from to much timing and not enough fuel?
but its only at slight throttle(under load) when the cars in OD
forgot to mention I have TEA stage 1.5 heads with 11:1CR and on 93 gas

i guess I could try backing the timing down 1 degree in the High octane sprark table lower rpms till it stops maybe? Anyone think that would help?
its not reallll bad, but you definitly can hear it. Like I said, sounds like somethings tinging around the headers almost when the car goes under slight load
The portion of timing that you are going to want to mess with is in the lower left of the timing table. Try reducing timing for all points lower than 2200 rpm and greater than .52 g/cyl slowly and see if the problem goes away.
Good Luck,
Kevin

Freeway driving, or low RPM / High Load conditions are usually less than 2200 RPM and somewhere in the .52 to .8 g/cyl range.
Reduce timing a couple degrees for all timing points less than 2200 RPM and .52 g/cyl to 1 g/cyl.

but the reason I was asking is because I have 2 files. One pings and one doesnt. Both have the same timing in the .52 down to .1 cells(2200 less). The only thing changed on them was the timing up top of that table down to .52g/cyl. 2-3 degrees was added there while the .52 down to 1 wasnt touched(2200below)? Still think lowering those lower left cells will fix this? In guess when you edit a few cells it effects the whole table though.
lemme know what you think and if anything above makes sense LMAO

Just a thought - Maybe since you have an A4 w/convertor, you may need to go a little further up the table than they are talking to cover it.
If you have monitoring software, you can log MAF (g/sec), RPM, Igntion Timing, KR.
You can calculate g/cyl with...
G/cyl = 15 * MAF (g/sec) / RPM
Get your car to ping again. Watch your KR. At the points that you generate KR calculate out g/sec and note the RPM. Look up the RPM and the g/sec on your high octane ignition table. This will give you a better idea of where you need to pull some timing.
Additionally, if you think it is caused by the hot air temperatures, you can pull some additional timing in the IAT / MAP table. Note the inlet air temp and the MAP that the pinging is happening at. Increase the amount of timing that is pulled at this point..... just another way to do it.
Good Luck
JNorris sent me a exel file with the format already so ill log the Maf(g) and figure this stuff out
thanks both of ya
I logged a quick cruise today and from 1500-2200 rpms I got ping/knock. From 1degree up to 7!!! No wonder I can hear it. Did the MAF in grams log and it seems im mostly in the .40-.55 cells when this happens. A few were in the .24-.3 cells, but mainly just .4-.6
so how much timing should I pull? Its mainly 4-6 degrees of knock untill I let off the gas. Its just part throttle cause as soon as I got WOT i get ZERO knock. I just cant have the car pinging when im cruising LMAO

Anyhoo. My rule of thumb is to pull 70% of the max amount of KR that you see. So, if you saw 7 KR, then I would pull 4 degrees of timing at that point. This usually does the trick.
Good Luck
thanks alot man... i know you must be a busy guyBTW, you and ol Joe Overton need to get together on tweakin those VE tables. He's the one that did mine. Only thing he touched was those and timing. Its just hard to tune blindfolded though and to get this crap perfect. Top end feels like a beast!
im gonna pull some timing again in those cells and see
but its in the 1300-2100rpms still and under very slight throttle.
LS1Black: did you have your timing tables adjusted??
