Default Gauges cluster

Mine is not working good (the oil pressure one), so If I chaNGE IT FOR ANOTHER, IT WILL WORK ON MY CAR WITHOUT ANYNEED OF CALIBRATION AT GM DEALER? Someone said that the computer won't let the car function because of a different VIN # at the new cluster? I'm not worry about changing millage, but the reading will work also on my car?

what year car? 99+ you need the GM dealer to resync the airbag module to the cluster to turn off a light. (you just need a tech 2)

Mine is a 98. I have some offers from 2002, 98 and 99 cars? If I use an older one (above 98) I will have problems? Thanks for your help on this.

You should stay with a '98 cluster, because of the difference in how the pcm and the cluster communicate. (if you have a Camaro/Firebird)

How do you know the problem is with the gauge, and not with the sending unit or the wiring connector?

I just think that could be possible. The thing is that when I turn off the engine, the RPM needle goes all the way down and stop on top of the oil gauge needle so I have to turn on the switch again (to accesory setting) and turn it off again and then the oil neddle go to where should be and the RPM all the way down. An auto mechanic said that maybe the oil gauge lost the calibration because of this and suggest to change the sending unit first because if my low oil pressure reading (at times) were correct, mu engine should be noisy at lifters and bottom end and this is not happening.

you have to use a 98 cluster in a 98 car, or you will fry the cluster.

Do not plug in a 98 into a 99+ car, or a 99+ cluster in a 98 car (without repinning the cluster)

You should be able to plug in a 98 cluster in a 98 car and be fine.

I would try to take out the cluster, clean up the connection, and reinstall - had similar problem with a couple of my gauges not always working correctly and this seems to have corrected it for me

Good luck

unfortunately, the sender goes from the motor to the gauge, so knowing what is the issue, would be hard to guess. You can change the cluster a lot easier than changing the sending unit, so that is what I would try first. the above poster about disconnecting, an reseating the harness is also a good sugestion, since in 10 years there could be a lot of corrosion on the harnesses. (if exposed to humid, or salty environments)
