Talking Talk me out of it!!!

Saw this on Craigslist.. 10 miles from my work.

I e-mailed him, the car has 170K on it. I was thinking of throwing $1,200 at him and see if he bites???

I can't decide if it's a good idea or bad idea for a side project, or something to fix and sell later.

depends on what similar mileage T/A's are going for in your area (around here it would be about 3-4k in running order) then see what a trans goes for and not some cheap used high mileage one thats been sitting outside, but a decent rebuilt one with a new torque converter. take that (about 700-800) added to the purchase price then if you feel confident you can swap the tranny yourself and can float the cash till someone buys it and you make maybe a grand (depending on the market in your area). if all that work sounds like it's worth your time for the amount of profit you'll make then go for it.

Also check out the tires, if the tread is low thats another 600 you'll have to throw at it in tires before anyone would buy it off you.

seems pretty solid for the price...think about it, you'd be getting an entire car for less than what most people put down on a lease. And its a Trans Am to boot! Can't beat that.

Id offer 1,000 and go from there $1,200 seems about a great price for that bird.

also you'll probably need shocks on it soon if they haven't been done before.

He won't budge a penny off of $1600.00

I think I'll pass and put the money into my Camaro.

You really want ANOTHER LT1? Did look good for the price in the pics though. That exact phrase "for the price" ends up making me get a lot of **** that isn't worth the time or effort to fix. You know? But hey at that price....... kidding, dont do it. Especially if he isn't budging on price. hes moving and has a car with a blown tranny? He should expect to eat it a bit.

I wouldn't do it. Throw that money at your LT1.

If it was in running order, 1600 would be a good price with 170k miles. F-Bodies are REALLY over-priced in my area and I only managed 2k out of my 93 Z w/ 172k on the clock. It had less, but the 3.73s that were on there had racked up a lot of fake miles.

My Z had a bad Catalytic converter as well. Entire ignition system was new though save for the starter. Even the ign cylinder was new.

Don't bother if he wont budge. His loss.

Really clean looking car in the pics but, like everyone else said, I wouldn't do it if he isn't willing to budge on the price. Between a trans rebuild, fluid, and your time to pull and reinstall it, I just don't see it being worth it. At least not for a car that has 170k and is 20 years old.
