Default POR-15 preperation

I plan on cleaning the underneath of my Firebird and then using POR-15 here in the next week or two.

I planned on power washing the underneath then using "simple green" on it, letting it sit for a bit, the power washing it off to remove any grime.

once dry, i want to put on POR-15 (grey).

is using "simple green" and adequate cleaner/preparation? or should I use the "metal prep" as recommended by Eastwood?

The only advice I have is... Watch the simple green. It WILL eat at aluminum if you let it sit too long.

Default Por 15

1. Follow Eastwoods recommendations, if not it will peel
2. I recommend Eastwoods epoxy sealer over por15, the por15 fades, and gets chalky over time.

thank you for the tips and advice. i will use the complete line of POR-15 products then (sealers, marine clean, metal prep - etc.)

i know sometime companies will say things to MAKE you buy more than you need.

thanks again.

I used the complete line from POR-15 myself and it worked great. I will say wear old clothes and put a tarp or something under the car. Do your best not to do it on a windy day. It will cause a lot of drips and runs under the car.

I've been using POR15 for quite a while. Never tried it on underbody but based on my useage,it would probably work well.
I've used it on battery tray, radiator support rail and rear ends.

based on what you see in the link pics, that coverage took about an 1/8 of a pint. The paint/coating fluid is very thin and penetrates well. Takes about 24 hours for a full cure/set/dry. I've never tried it on freshly cleaned bare iron/steel as its' formulation requires an oxide(rust)layer.
I don't think I'd attempt an upward coating because of its' potential sloppiness. Getting on the skin,if allowed to dry,is permanent. Prior to drying, can be removed with lacquer thinner, acetone. An open container(not properly sealed after use) is sensitive to humidity in the air,the natural moisture in rust is part of the setting process.

i used rust bullet silver, as opposed to POR15. It is similar, and preferred it for the color. I did not use simple green for prep, I sanded the under side of the car with an orbital sander.
