Could this be what you're thinking of?

One of the best performing Trans Am’s was the 1989 20th anniversary Turbo Trans Am, with a 255-bhp version of the 3.8-liter Turbo V-6 from the Buick Grand National and GNX. This was an improved engine, outperforming either Buick-5.0 sec 0 to 60 mph, 100 mph plus in the quarter-mile, and a top speed over 160 mph.

The Trans Am is selected to pace the Indianapolis 500. Pontiac markets another pace car replica. This special 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am (TTA) based on the GTA is only available in white with tan interior and comes equipped with a Buick 3.8L V6 with a turbocharger developed from the Grand National. These replicas are as close to the actual pace car as any replica offered up to this time. The only changes made to the cars that actually were on the track during the race were the additions of strobe lights and safety equipment. 1,555 were produced, 5 being test cars. Out of 1,550 cars produced by PAS, the actual pace cars were randomly selected and sent to Indy for testing and modification. When they were released to the public they were underrated in power. Not all came with T-Tops or came with leather either, there were hardtops and cloth cars. Every car has an an automatic transmission, the 200R4. The five test TTA's, because they were for pre-production use, were pulled off of the assembly line without regard to color and they were not white. At least two of these test cars were sold to private individuals. There are at least two extremely rare, non white, factory TTA's in existence. Its known that one is red. GM did not offer a factory convertible TTA. However, one was created by ASC.

They did Turbo Trans Ams in 1980 and 1981, also.

There is no such thing. The only "special" cars in 91 would have been the Firehawk. Why does everyone supposedly have or know someone that has these "special edition" cars?

Aha, interesting! Hadn't heard of that before; there seems to be very little information around about these. Here's what I found:

Pontiac Firebird Bandit edition

Well, I got a response back from a Visitor that gave me some info about cars like this. Here is what Mike Cundiff had to say:

"Hey, I was looking around at your TA Nats 03 page and noticed the picture of the red '90 T/A that you asked "Was that hood scoop factory?". I'm 90% sure from the pic that it's a picture of a Bandit II special edition Trans Am sold at Pontiac Dealers. From what I know Chattanooga Custom Creations (I believe) took delivery of 600 Trans Ams in 1990 and 1991 and turned them into 'modern' SE Bandit editions. My mother owned #26 from 1990. The car featured the ground effects all around, the hood sccop (more like a bubble cause it didn't even appear to be operational like the later 2nd gens at least looked the part), special wheels simulating the 15x8 snowflakes and interior appointments such as a gold dash and embroidered floor mats and seats. Just thought I'd pass on some info."

1991 Pontiac Firebird Formula Bandit II Limited Edition

We received the following email from Chris Luke. " I bought the Firebird from a dealership, something I never do! But it has been a great car to restore. First was the paint and body. The door lock, lights, windows, cruise and mirror control were all nonfunctional. By removing a flashlight from the door, a dropped penny from the cigarette lighter and two fuses all was better. Next was the engine, a 305 with poor
tuning. After replacing the EGR, plugs and wires it runs like a charm.
Since then I have been working on replacing worn gaskets, chewed up
interior parts, and redoing the rims. Since owning it I've put 6,000 miles
on her and been offered up to $2000 more than what I paid. Not letting go
of her yet though, to much fun and the work that is left is too easy! :-)
Here is a picture of the interior and some of the fixes/extras I've added.
You might notice the bolts in the door. That is where the cup/map holder
should be. I am not in a rush to replace it either. The gold plate on the passenger side dash is the original plate showing that this was #69 of 600 of this style made 1991.

The Firebird that I was talking about was a limit edition and not a special edition, my bad. They were selling it at one of those helping foundations, cars for causes or some other foundation. They wanted 2900 for the bird. In the magazine it looked good, no dents, was reved up thinking it was the one with the turbo.

Down the block from where I live is a gta firebird sitting in a drive way, needs some work done but should clean up very nice. I think the neighbor is going to restore it because he doesn't drive it nor does he have it for sale.

zepher, acw, good looking birds.

if he's approachable id ask him about it. ive heard alot of stories and experiences from people who have made an offer about a car not for sale or even just talked to the owner if it isnt in use. if youre lucky the owner might just be needing an extra push to sell it especially he doest have the money or if theres another reason

id go for it if your really interested
