Default PREMIUM gas?!

I found out something shocking tonight... call me a newbie, but it is something I never knew and seriously makes me question many things:

LS1 cars take premium gas!

This *seriously* makes me question if I want to buy a LS1 now, espically to be a daily driver. With gas prices today as high as they are........ thats some serious cash going to gas!

What happens if I only use 87 octane as opposed to 91 or 93?

The difference in the cost of a tank of gas is about $3 between regular and premium. If you get 20 mpg, you'll get 280 miles out of 14 gallons. 12,000 miles a year, or 1000 miles a month, and you're looking at less than 4 tanks per month... we'll round up and say it's the full 4 tanks, you're still looking at $12/month, or $144/year.

$144/year is not worth the performance loss... and certainly not worth getting a different car over.

if 20 cents per gallon is enough to sway you from it you didn't want very baddly to begin with. i can understand if you said insurance but if premium gas is the straw that breades the camels back it was a weak camel. i average around 18-21mpg in my a4 with at least 2 runs up to 120 or so per tank.

lol...

If you want a performance car, expect to be running premium gas and synthetic oil.

I seriously never knew these bad boys took premium gas. My friend put 87 in his 00 Camaro Z28 all the time, seemed to run like a scaldad dog anyway. I just assumed all LS1's therefore took regular gas. Kinda took me off guard when I heard otherwise.
Synthetic oil I knew about, but not premium gas.

LS1's aren't that bad on gas, at least mine isn't. Just get one, don't get a V6 you'll be kicking yourself later.

Yea, the difference in the price of gas isn't going to make much difference. I run synthetic oil and only pump 93-94 octane and it doesn't really make much of a dent in my pocket. For the advantages of running premium over regular (more performance, cleaner internals of the engine, better mileage, etc.) it's more than worth it to me. By the way, I know a few guys that do run regular gas through their cars and they run fine but I still wouldn't do it. I agree with the V6 statetment, don't get one or you'll hate yourself later.

dodge=12-14mpg
SS=18-24mph(depening on what way i take home)

and everynight ihave it out trust me im wasting some gas.

Using premium fuel will pay for itself in these cars.

A lot of the mods for these cars require the highest grade of premium that you can find. I absolutely have to run premium now due to my mods.

The price of premium is a small trade off for the fun factor of performance.

yeah as stated its a $3.00 ish difference in gast between reg adn remium, no matter how much gas is, the way i see it the more expensive gas is the more sence it makes to use premium.

if your complaining about gas prices, wait till you see your insurance quotes.

If you're worrying about the price of gas for the LS1, you probably don't want to research the amount of money nice mods cost.

I know insurance is going to be killer, I took that into consideration. I also knew I'd be putting synthetic fluids into my T/A, so that was also taken into consideration... along with a few other things.

But, as ws6gluemaker said... maybe this camel WAS weak. Premium gas IS enough to make me change my mind (I can't justify paying $0.20 extra per gallon ON TOP OF all the other "extra" costs a T/A would incure, including mods and fixing things that break). Its just not worth it in my eyes, espically with gas prices as high as they are now. If we were still below $2.00 per gallon, it would be a different story. But $2.50 - $3.00 for premium gas? No thanks.

So with that said... I'm off the market for a T/A (for now). Thanks for answering my stupid questions and not flaming me too bad.

I'll probably buy a T/A years down the road... when I have extra cash, and extra garage space. I'll just get to restoring my 1963 1/2 Ford Galaxie 500XL 427 fastback for now though.

Lord knows that 1963 doesn't drink hella amounts of gas nor does it require ungodly amounts of money to maintain/restore.....

Probably gets half the gas mileage of a LS1, if that.

The 63 1/2 will be a show car, nothing more. There weren't many 63.5 Galaxie 500XL with 427's built, and even fewer still exist. Was sold to me for $1000. Seller had no idea what he had...
