vararam and a tune wakes the car up nicely.
if you want to run crap gas, just go with a trans tune/reduction in torque management, if you use 93 you can get more aggressive with timing and will pick up another 15-20 to the tire. doesn't say were you're from, make sure you use a reputable tuner, no hand held nonsense. The transmissions are stout but can be burnt up QUICKLY so look for someone who has a reputation for trans tuning (e.g. understanding of ALL the tables/values). MANY of the tuners spend little time working on the trans tune, mostly focus on the timing/fuel (ecm side of it).
I know the place that does my tuning has hired a GM transmission engineer in the past to fly in and teach them the ins and outs of the transmission software in the newer cars/trucks, the newer trans' aren't like the old ones (4spd vs 6spd etc) this is why the trans' are getting jacked up by tuners who are guessing and experimenting without the proper training behind their (old style) techniques.
Start there and you have a solid foundation for any future mods.

use the cam i have in my car, port the stock heads with LT's, UD pulley, vararam and tune you'll be 12.0-.2 all day long. The cam i have in my car is under .600 lift, 116 LSA idles almost stock. Could i run a big cam and knock another .2-.3 off? yeah...but i wanted the car to be a pleasure to drive, take anywhere.
When i was 18 i loved the lope of a big cam... not so much 20+yrs later lol also remember, the bigger the cam the more it sucks with a stock converter..
Many guys that throw a big cam in and stay stock converter don't last long.. just another thing to keep in mind.
PS definitely the DOD delete... it's a time bomb.

Some guys have been able to run low 12's with boltons, DR's, and a good converter. So far my best was a 12.38. I have a 222/226 PatG cam, long tubes and cat back, Vararam, and a good tune. That was when I was on the stock stall. With just bolt ons you would probably need to run a ported TB and intake manifold as well.

Staging Lane
CAI, headers/exhaust, and a dyno tune. Buy quality parts and not only will you be in the 12's, but it will be reliable.
I'm now cammed with a Yank converter but I have no idea what my car will run in the 1/4 mile. Street tires, but it manages to hook decently on the street, so I imagine I'd be ok at the track in good conditions.

I'm in the same boat as you now. I want to go back to the track, but I feel like I'll be wasting my time without some sticky tires.
