I have an 04 auto. There are definately some drawbacks to the auto but it really depends on what you want it to do. The main short coming is lack of gears, 4 for the auto vs. 6 for the manual. From a standing start there is not a whole lot of difference, driver ability makes alot of difference for the manual not too much for the auto. It's when passing or exiting a corner where you really wish you had an extra gear. The broad torque curve makes this not too bad but its all up to your choice.
On another note GTOs aren't that rare and a car is expensive wait till you can get what you really want its much better that way.

Auto= track car, horrible dd gas mileage compared to the m6
M6= everything else, I couldn't imagine owning a car like this and not throwing my own gears

Yeah and there also hard to find with the factory 18" wheels. They look weak with the 17"s but with the 18's they look damn good. But when and if you do find one they want 18K or more for it. Im def getting one in blue or silver but will wait till next winter for the prices to drop some more.

When I purchased my 2006 GTO in March of 2007 there were only 7 of the combination I wanted QSM, M6, Black Interior in a 250 mile radius.
Auto's were everywhere. If I was going to buy a car with an auto, I would have looked hard at some of the dodge products, such as the SRT-8 charger or other. Since the GTO comes in a manual, it was a no brainer to buy.
I did upgrade to the 18" wheels, they do look much better, but traction sucks worse than stock.
Ryan <--License place is M6 GTO if that tells you anything

IF i had to pick again. I would pick auto. Theres one on ls1gto.com with a underdrive and cold air and its a auto that ran a 12.6 (05-06-6.0) Thats good in my book. But i have no complaints with my 6 speed.

If your planning on modding the hell out of this thing it doesnt matter what trans you get, it will be fast as hell either way. youd probably have more fun in the M6 and people would think your bad *** if you rip a goot ET bangin your own gears

six speed would be just for fun. the auto can be viscious at the strip and for performance as most of the fastest gtos are autos. i have a turbocharged, auto gto and love it everyday

It's all about what you want to do with the car. I DD mine but I also track it pretty hard when it's open. Mine is an A4, about to be an A3 (TH400 swap). I wouldn't even want a stick with the power I have right now. I'd need stock in a tire company. My personal opinion is this, If you are just a recreational driver and don't plan to track the car and go faster than 11.00-11.50, then the M6 is a great option. If youre looking a a 10 second car or faster, then the A4 is almost a must. 10 seconds is about when the car will start controling the driver in an M6. I'm not one to let my car drive me....

I have been thinking long and hard about swapping to a fully built A4. The swap is quite expensive but when you think I go through a 1800 clutch every year it wouldnt take long to make up the difference. My problem is I have around 40k in mods done to the car and another 5-10 does not sound like fun.
