dad says GTO can go 188-200 mph, help me convince him otherwise
hey guys. ok my dad keeps going on and on about how his friend got a ticket in his GTO going 188 mph, and it can go 200. he says he "removed the governor, and uses the fuel that he puts in his airplanes" and the car can go that fast. he wont listen to anything i say, so how can i prove to him that is not possible? like maybe it will run out of gear before that or something......not stable enough.. its driving me crazy.......

i dont think gearing or aerodynamics will allow him to go to 200...but thats just an educated guess on my part. Tell him to look at the front end of a Vette, notice its more pointed...and it can only get to 178 or so. The GTO is a brick with rounded edges compared to the vette.

Based on the engine redline (6,200rpm), the final ratio (rear gear) of 3.46 and the gear ratio of 4th gear (1.00:1), the top speed in 4th would be 136.87mph. If the person had a long enough straight run and was able to rev it to redline in 5th (.84:1), the top speed would be 162.95. Pontiac claims have a top speed of 161.95. If...IF...that's a BIG IF, the GTO had enough gusto (power) to rev in 6th gear (.57:1 ratio) and a long enough straight, it would be 240mph...not likely though with the ample 350hp.
The final ratio of the Automatic car is .70:1 and that would calculate to a top speed of 195.54, however I don't think with aerodynmics and the power to weight ratio, it could reach that number. The 160mph claim by Pontiac seems to be correct.

You can put jet fuel in a car engine. Not sure about how healthy it is, I knew someome with an old Chevelle who did it and it was wicked. I do know that it's now illegal to do it, at least here.

well there is a big difference between jet fuel and regular general aviation fuel. For the Piper Archer I fly I use 100LL (LowLead). So I guess you could use that in a car..but i doubt you could use jet fuel.

Before owning a GTO I never knew what the world above 100mph was like within my first week of owning I reached 140mph efforlessly settling a highway race, didn't feel like 140, highspeed public highway racing I don't condone, a drag race or roll from 30 proves more then some dumbass kid in an evo lancer trying to see who has the faster top speed.

going to jail for over 100 mph ........it all depends on what state you reside in...troopers here in SC write tickets everyday for speeds over 100mph...now i would hate to go in front of a judge asking for help on one of these tickets, plus your insurance costs for all those points........

Can you even put fuel for airplanes in a car? Seems like that would turn out bad.

Jet fuel is basically kerosene. I'm pretty sure that will not burn in a normal automobile engine.

Kerosene and diesel along with other detergents/additives to do different things as far as flash point and all that. And you'd probably burn your injectors up long before you saw the benefits off AV gas in something like a GTO.
