Default Is the GTO Judge the fastest Muscle Car?

Hey Guys,

I saw the thread started about the fastest muscle car, and obviously the new GTO is a revised version. Good topic, but I think the answer isn't too far away.

Looks like the guys at Dream Car Garage created a Muscle Car Shootout that is airing on SPEED and they included a 1969 GTO Judge in fully restored condition.

Check it out at www.dreamcargarage.com.

Do you guys think anything was left out?

Here is where the info is

No - it was the superbird. Doesn't even look like they included one in the speed dealy - which isn't surprising because most people won't let anybody run their $100k+ cars very hard.

I don't see why the Hemi Challenger wouldn't do just as good as the superbird. The Challenger was more of the "pony car" size. I'm not up on the whole 60's and 70's era cars though.

NO, the fastest production car was a 1968 Dart with a hemi in it. They made a few and those they made ran a 11.85 with the window stick still on it.

Well, the caption was fastest - not quickest. The superbird would run 200mph - give or take - bone stock due to better aero. It probably was geared more for top end as well for Nascar purposes.
There is a good possibility that the hemi dart is the quickest bone stock - although that silly website somebody posted around here had one of the cuda / challengers running sub-11's from a magazine. I doubt that was bone stock w/ late '60's / early '70's era tires.

True. I didn't take than into consideration. I'm sure though, that they are going to be judging "fastest" by 1/4 mile performance.

Nonetheless, I'd say the Charger Daytona would be my favorite Mopar.

The fastest cars that were made back in the "muscle car era", let's call 1960 to 1973, were the 1968 hemi dart, a 1969 copo camaro with the ZL1 optional motor, the ram airIV firebirds and GTO's, ford had a fairlane stripper car that had their big block in it in 1967 I wana say that was a low 12 second car, the ls6 chevelle and corvette's were also quite quick. Fastest top speed hands down went to the winged hemi cars from mopar, the datyona chagrer and plymouth superbird, both would go well over the 200 mph mark, in 1970. Sad thing is that there isn't a car made in the u.s. today that could beat a hemi dart off the showroom floor, not even a new Ford GT. And you could buy every hemi dart that was made in 1968 for today's price of one GT. Go figure.

It ws either a 427 or a 428. I'm not really an expert on old Fords, but I know that it was one or the other. I know for sure that the factory car that was fast was a 427 or a 428, dual 4 barrels, lightened alot from the factory, and ran about 12 flat, on the good ol red line's that they had in the day. Pretty good for junk rubber like that.

I know that a 70 Buick GS 455 Automatic would run LOW 13's at 109 stock as I have seen one run 3 times the same day with temps in the high 80's! I think if slicks were allowed in his class he would have in the 12's.

He probably wasn't on bias-ply tires - and you need to watch out when they say "it's stock".

The GS was on radials, but not DR's. There could have been hidden mods, but the AC was still there and working and all else looked stock, including exhaust manifolds, so I thought it was a pretty cool car.

Well, I own one and would love to be able to say "yes," but except maybe for the Ram Air IV cars, they weren't even in the running. To answer a question like this, though, you have to distinguish between over-the-counter race cars (like Hemi Darts with lexan windows & aluminum bumpers, Super Duty Catalinas, 427 Fairlanes, etc.), and special order cars (COPO Camaros) from regular production musclecars. Among those, Buick Stage 1 455s, LS6 Chevelles, Hemis (when they ran right), Mopar 440 Six-Pack cars, 455 SD Trans Ams were among the fastest. Notable mentions were the 455 Hurst Olds, Ram Air IV, 455HO, and Tri-Power Pontiacs and many others.

50 Fastest Muscle Cars (By 1/4 Mile Times)

This is, of course, excluding COPO's, limited runs, one offs, etc...

Of course, I think if we were including those limited run cars, the Yenko Nova would probably be top dog.

"But his wildest creation was the Yenko Nova S/C which featured a dealer installed 427 engine. The Nova actually was the lightest of the three vehicles and had the best weight distribution so they were actually the fastest of the Yenko Super Cars. Just a few were sold, as they were so fast (0-60 in 4 seconds) that they were downright dangerous. In retrospect, Yenko remarked that "this probably wasn't the safest car in the world.""

The fairlane that ford made was actually called a thunderbolt. The thunderbolt was one of the fastest, maybe the fastest cars of that time period. It had a 500 horse 427 in it and ran anywhere in the 11.6-11.9 range.
