Default Solid axle conversion?

Anyone know if there is a solid axle conversion for the GTO? I really don't care what it would do to the ride/handling of the car, i just want to go fast in a straight line. I looked at the Diff tech 9", but that's a pricey sumbitch. Anyone know of one, or if a company is working on one?

Well BMR offers like 3 different solid axles for the GTO with the carbon fiber one rated at more power than you'll ever make around $1200. I also believe Harrop is working on a rear end conversion that uses a GM 12 bolt rear gearset with a beefier differential and drops right into the GTO/Monaro.

I believe the BMR parts you are refering to are the driveshaft options. I'm talking about ditching the IRS and putting in a solid rear, preferably a ford 9". I'm wondering if there is a kit out there for this, or am i stuck ponying up $3600 for the diff tech IRS when the time comes.

You might check some of the Aussie Monaro forums. I'm sure its been done there. The GTO is still fairly new to us and the IRS has proven good enough for BMR's GTO and its DAMN fast for a streetable car.

Look up these guys...

www.artmorrison.com

I am getting a 9 inch rear and a 4-link for my Corvette from them. I'm even getting it set up for a driveline with a 1.5 inch offset to the passenger side. The corvette is really tight to get a four link into because of the lack of rear space behind the drivers seat but you should be able to get it for the GTO.

Yes, Art Morrison does mostly street rod and full on race car stuff.

No, you don't have to backhalf and tub it unless you really want to. I'm only having the Corvette's rear end narrowed 1 inch to accomodate 335's more easily.

BMR currently has the diff tech 9" IRS. That may just end up being a $3600 bullet i have to bite when the time comes...

$3600?HAHA.try more like $5000 by the time you buy gears, carrier, bearings, pinion support and that doesn't even include a driveshaft, yoke and axles.Look at almost $8,000 by the time you're done.

I believe Diff Technics is reworking their 9" rear end to be even stronger and perhaps less expensive. Their are a few people who have done the solid rear conversion on street/strip cars running 10's and better over at the GTO forum.

if you just want to do straight axle to go fast straight, just hack the chit out of the car and weld your own in. you can get a ford 9" and a miller welder for less than 8000. might as well, if youre going to destroy the appeal of the car anyways.. the dana m80 is a solid 8+" rear end. why take a nice car and ruin it? you get an f body for that. (no offense to the f body guys. im new here)

Consider this, the IRS in it's current form HAS been able to hold at least one GTO (auto) going 9's. But most of the M6 cars trash the differential too quickly before they can even get into the 10's. People who are primarly drag racing the cars dont give a heck about the "appeal" of the factory IRS. Most dont even daily drive them at that point. Remember, we are talking about people running 9's and 10's if not faster in the quarter mile. Even F-body guys have rear end troubles at that point.

well, then consider getting a car with a straight axle from the factory........... why take a chassis built for road racing and drag it? there are plenty of cars far better suited to run 9's, that don't cost 30k. it would be like setting up a nova for autocross. yeah, you could, but why?

To each their own. I am also interested in the solid axle swap. I have read on the GTO board that someone has done it, and if you or I were to have a shop professionally install the solid rear; it would be around 8k... not worth it. I rather spend the 5k for the Built IRS from our sponsors.
