Cause it's too hard to say "Grand Turismo Omologato". You have to use your imagination but the letters are there.

Actually you're only half right, GTO also stands for Grand Touring Option, the GTO used to be an option of the Pontiac Lemans before it became its own line.

Back when my dad had his 68 he used to get teased by his buddies that GTO stood for "Go To Oldsmobile".

Cool Hmm....

Two favorite theories here.

1. Take GTO, mix it up, GOT=goat, (easier to say.)
2. GTOs used lots of Gas, Tires, and Oil in the old days. Still do, kinda.
There is always the official version, from the GTO Owners' association, which is the Grand Tourismo Omolagato, thing. I think that's somewhere on the Pontiac site, in the history section, too.

Happy Motoring,

Maximental

I've never heard of the "Grand Touring Option".... just the "Grand Turismo Omologato" which if I remember right, meant something like "race car for the street" or something equivalent. Anyone else??

A little googling found me this:

http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery;...2_1&sbid=lc02a

The "O" means volume produced. So the GTO is a GT for the masses.

GTO = Gran Turismo Omalogado = Grand Touring Sedan in italian.
the nickname GOAT Came because GTO with the O and the T swapped would spell GOT (the O is a long O), but because people would be confused, thinking it was the word got, they added an A to elongate the sound. GTO was never a Grand Touring Option. The TEMPEST had an option called GTO, but it always stood for Gran Turismo Omalogado (a name stolen from ferarri).
