I'm not sure it is a problem honestly. I dont recall anyone breaking the half shaft itself but BMR did shear the stub axles off on their 9 second GTO awhile back.

It has been my experience that half-shafts are a high mortality item when they are used for a long time or used hard. They wear out relatively quickly. On older cars I have seen some wierd problems, IE: wobbling in the drive train, etc., go away when they were replaced. I've heard that the new ones for the '05s are beefed up over the '04s. I would imagine that GM engineered them to keep up w/stock hp and not much more, just like they did with the driveshaft.
I am going to replace mine when I get the chance, and keep the stock ones around as temporary replacements, just in case.
My motto on this stuff is "Better safe than sorry."

Ummm.... I think 400hp is about the limit w/ stock halfshalfs. If you get those replaced with aftermarket halfs, I think the drive shaft will be the next to go, if it's stock. And your clutch is also limted to around 400hp too. If it's stock.

Isnt the guy with the 10 second STS GTO running stock drivetrain minus the trans and a Harrop diff cover? He is pushing just shy of 600whp and nearly 700tq to the ground and runs mid 10's. And that is on stock 04 shafts. If the gears and shafts were in fact beefed up for 05 (they clearly do use a different part number) then i am willing to bet the stock 05 parts should be good for awhile.
To be honest, the worst thing you can have to damage these parts is wheel hop. I ran factory stock drive shafts in my Honda that was running just shy of 11's and it made all sorts of 6-7k rpm clutch drops on slicks.

Again, likely caused by wheel hop as he even suggested. Konis on the rear is about $300 and are said to nearly eliminate wheel hop when put on the hardest setting. I havent heard much feedback from people who frequent the track yet but we will find out soon enough.
