Default Hushpower muffler Yeah or Nay?

I bought an '04 GTO from a guy in IA and he had put a custom system that is basically straight pipes from the cat back with 4" SS tips. I love the tone but have two problems with the sound.

What is unusual is there is basically no drone.

1. At idle when you are standing outside the car all you hear is a puffing air our the tailpipes.

2. I do not like all the excessive popping when you downshift. Some popping is ok but not this level.

I was told by my local Flowmaster exhuast dealer that I sould go with Hushpower Mufflers just before the tips. What do yo guys think? Oh forgot to mention, the car has the '05 rear bumper.

Why dont you just throw away his hacked exhaust and correct the issue by getting a new exhaust that sounds good?

The Corsa, B&B, Magnaflow and Loudmouth II are really nice.

Sounds interesting but I likethe overall sound of what I have other than the airy sound when at idle and you are standing in the rear. The popping I can live with.

GMHGTO,

Do or can you get a sound clip? Is this the one with the turbo mufflers? Lastly, does it have a low deep tone?

Thanks

If you like the sound but dislike alot of the popping and stuf, go with a 4in pipe from the cat's instead of that 4 in.....I have a cutsom 3 in (Flow MAster Bullets)exhuast on my TA, it sounds awesome, rumbles nicely at idle, No drone.
Now I dont have Cat's either so that may be why mine is not so quiet, but I LOVE the way it sounds.....and I get very lil to no popping on down shifts or upshifts.....But If you want great sound with no popping and stuff, go with what some of the others have suggested, Borla, Stainless Works, and so on.

Good luck!!

Are the bullets right before the tips or right after where the CAT would have been?

You can place them wherever they will fit.

I think I am going to replace the whole custom cut and paste cat-back with one from SS Works...2 turbo mufflers, 3" exhaust with 4" tips. All stainless. What do you guys think? Anyone got a SS system on their car and can give me an idea of the tone and sound level. I like the volume of the straight pipe but not the tone at idle.

you will need to search ls1gto.com for a thread created by Chris White (GTPprix), he is owner of stainless works 04>05 catback #001, SW used his car to make the prototype the exhaust. It does use turbo mufflers, the sound is deep and mellowey, it sounds just a level above stock. I like stealthy stuff like this, it could even cover up the lope of a small cam

I knew a Chris White out of Houston when I had my GTP. Great guy. I will have to look him up.

My bullets are at the very end of my set up, the turn downs dump right before the axle and are canted in at roughly 45* facing in towards each other..

In the pic that I attached you can see how BIG my bullets are, They give a very deep rumble and are louder than stock(Obviously)but arent extremely loud untill you get on the go pedal!!

I could have gone with smaller bullets, but I paid 175 for this(Shipp[ing included)so I wasnt to picky.....

I wont have any better pics of the ehxhaust until Jan or so.....But I would go with 3in pipes and to your 4in tips...That might work and sound pretty good....Never know until ya try.....

Modding is all trial and error I guess.....

Went with SS Works Catback system. It has their S-Tube turbo mufflers and 4" rolled tips. Once I get it installed I will provide comments.

Your cheaper alternative will be to put some mufflers on. No need to spend $ on a new catback. I just got my mufflers cut-out today and left the resonator in the middle, and it sounds damn good. These cars must have pretty high-flow cats on it for being as loud as it is right now.

Was going to do that but didn't like the way the system already looked after the original mufflers where cut out. I wanted to go with a clean look. But yes you can just replace the mufflers. Also mine has been changed from an '04 to an '05 dual exhaust.
