It stands for Fixed Roof Coupe.
Some people call it a Factory Race Car.

They are like pre-Z06

Would it really be that bad?? I assumed it would be pretty closed between a Z06(not a new one) and a 05 GTO??

I can understand your cousin's feelings.

MY subjective views on the cars having had some seat time (not test drives) in all of them ...

STYLE
C5 Z06 = 9/10 - look at those lines ... its a VETTE!!!
04 GTO = 6/10 - subtle but not unpleasant - sleeper
05 GTO = 7/10 - subtle slightly more agressive
Charger R/T = 6/10 - new and fresh but a four door in a coupe's world
Charger SRT8 = 8/10 - new and fresh with more agressive scoops and GFX & 20"s

FUN FACTOR
C5 Z06 = 9/10 - great power and good control - balanced
04 GTO = 6/10 - good power and average control - too heavy
05 GTO = 7/10 - better power and average control - too heavy
Charger R/T = 5/10 - average power and average control - feel disconnected with auto
Charger SRT8 = 8/10 - great power and average control - too heavy

RACE DRIVING COMFORT
C5 Z06 = 9/10 - great power / predictable and balanced / great brakes
04 GTO = 5/10 - descent power / good balance / SCARY brakes
05 GTO = 6/10 - good power / good balance / good brakes
Charger R/T = 4/10 - average power / average balance / scary brakes
Charger SRT8 = 7/10 - great power / good balance / good brakes

STREET DRIVING COMFORT
C5 Z06 = 5/10 - Mediocre ride quality / horrible on driveways / difficult entry-exit / great passing power
04 GTO = 7/10 - Great Ride quality / road friendly / easy entry-exit / descent passing power
05 GTO = 8/10 - Great Ride quality / road friendly / easy entry-exit / good passing power
Charger R/T = 9/10 - Great Ride quality / road friendly / excellent entry-exit / average passing power / sedan
Charger SRT8 = 9/10 Great Ride quality / road friendly / excellent entry-exit / great passing power / sedan

FIT-FINISH Creature Comforts
C5 Z06 = 6/10 - gaps and plastic like touch / minimalist / circa 1995 stereo / lots of motor and road noise feedback
04 GTO = 8/10 - well fitted / psuedo luxury / good stereo / good noise isolation
05 GTO = 8/10 - well fitted / psuedo luxury / good stereo / good noise isolation
Charger R/T = 8/10 - well fitted / psuedo luxury / good stereo / good noise isolation
Charger SRT8 = 9/10 - well fitted / luxury / great stereo / good noise isolation

This is a wide range of cars and all have different purposes ... its hard to put the Z06 in the mix being it is a purpose built vehicle.

Their is no contest when it comes to performance ... Z06 wins hands down

When i have to drive it everyday the 05 GTO and Charger SRT8 are close runners with the 05 GTO winning in my wallet category.

The 04 GTO is close behind only lacking the power and braking category

and well ... the Charger RT is last on my list ... to each his own ... the SRT8 only gets considered because of it great performance off setting the fact it is a sedan.

I would definitely look into the 04 GTO for 20 grand. IT's making about 30 rwhp more than a stock 05 and its cheaper. The only thing that sounds bad about it is it need rear wheels badly... you know what that means. Lots of burnouts, donuts, who knows what else. The guy might have beat on the engine, but for the price it might still be worth it!

Just an FYI...

I put 10k miles on my 04 GTO...

- Did one burn-out
- Never took it to the strip

And they were completely bald!

The combination of 375 rwhp and 3800lbs wears Z-Rated rubber fast!

LOL...kevin said he bounced off the rev limiter on the highway so that beating wasn't all his cars fault...but I do have the two time slips from the track if there is any question what car is faster

Back on topic...Keep the vette, he'd be crazy not too (and for god sakes drive it more!! Cars are meant to be DRIVEN not looked at)...Im in the same situation now, time to get rid of my sports car and get more of a "family car", but I am fighting the power on that one...

Bring on the FRC. I've wasted quite a few, even stock.

I would never get rid of my Z06 for a GTO, I can understand that the GTO would make a much better daily driver, but I couldn't make that swap, I would hate myself for doing it after a day or two in the GTO

I have a 2004 GTO. When I bought, I was also considering a Vette. Couple of things against the Vette, IMO.
1) It still struggles with that plasticy, rattle, squeek interior.
2) It is a sports car, with all that goes with it, including rough ride from the stiffer suspension.
3) I'm a muscle car guy, always have been. The last gen f-body doesn't have the right feel for a muscle car. It has plenty of muscle, don't get me wrong, just not the right feel. Too much of the *** scraping on pavement sports car feel. Obviously, the Vette totally misses in this regard too.
4) I'm a bigger guy. I was surprised that I could get into the Vette fine, and was comfortable driving it. HOWever, getting out of it was a different story. Find a parking space with room to open the door all the way, then tilt and crawl out of the seat. Maybe with time I would have found a less humiliating exit method.

That having been said, I love, absolutely love the C5 and C6 Vette. The performance, from the factory, makes it a world beater (yea, we're talking Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo, kiss my *** performance). And the styling, well that car has enough curves and sex appeal to give me a woody. BUT, it isn't the car for me. Maybe that is what your friend has decided as well.

A lot of what makes the GTO a heavier car than the f-body also is what makes it a nicer ride. Better materials, better design, more sound deadening material, etc. Working on the car is a breeze, 30 minutes to change plugs, headers only require the steering rack to be dropped to install the driver's side, passenger side drops right in. Every time I work on it, I am again surprised how easy it is to work on. The front fascia comes off with 5 screws and 5 minutes.

Right now, the 2004 w/LS1 is easier to mod. More parts available, better engine knowledge base (it is called LS1tech, afterall), and all the tuner tools (LS1edit, HPtuners, etc.) are readily available. I think LS2edit is out, but only Beta support for LS2 in HPTuners. Still, the LS2 has 50 more HP and some other tweaks that are nice. And right about now you will start to find good deals on the 05's as well.

Just a few thoughts.

About the only thing we have in common is that great clutch. Did you use the composite steel or aluminum flywheel?
