Default new here saying hello and have a question

hi to all...this board is very informative and is filled with tons of info...but i do have a question....besides the '04 gto's not havaing the hood scoops and dual tips...how do the engines compare to one another...i know the obvious hp and disp. but i mean for aftermarket mods which engine would be the better one to go with....it seems that having a extra 400cc and over head cams would without a doubt be the better way but i do not know that much about american v-8's as opposed to foreign 4's and 6's....finnaly why im asking this question is that i want to get a gto for my birthday this year in dec. and i was curious should i save more and get a higher not with the 05 or get the 04 and change the hood and rear. thanks for your time

Welcome to the board. First, and most importantly, never, NEVER use the term "cc" in any sentence talking about american V8's. That will get you a LOT of flak from the board members. Next, the '05 and '06 GTO's have the 6.0 liter 400 hp LS2 engine, as opposed to the '04 with the 5.7 liter 350 hp LS1 engine. NEITHER of them have overhead cams. Both are pushrod technology engines.

Unless you plan to go ape-**** with how much modding you want to do, and need major money to do it with, I would get the '05 version. Considerably faster than the '04's stock for stock, and look better too. The aftermarket for the LS1 is larger, having been around since 1997, but the aftermarket for the LS2 is not exactly rare either. You still have pretty much the same types of bolt-on options with either one.

, so true, don't ever say "cc", say "ci".

Hey bud, welcome to the site. The '04 GTO's had a 350hp LS1 which is a third generation engine. The '05 GTO's had a 400hp LS2 which is a fourth generation engine. Both are great engines you just starting with more displacement and power with the newer generations. The fourth generation engines aren't really all that different from the third generation engines. The LS7's start to get larger and more powerful but that's a different conversation. Bottom line, both are great and you can mod the hell out of either of them but I'd opt for the LS2 just because your starting with newer and more powerful, a little more flexability in the future.

welcome, second for the 05, you also add the new manifold, with a 90mm thottle body out of the box, however there is a trade off, being covette like drive by wire, make ungrading, not really needed, to a after market throttle body.

Save the extra money for the '05 instead of spending it making the '04 look like the '05. Plus you get a lil more bang... LS2

well the rover is dead ,POS british junk, so i had to go with the 04 because of my price range. i went to the dealership and got them to locate a black on black 6 speed....LS1....it should be in before friday where i can pick it up and dispose of the rover truck....i'll probably run her stock untill i get completely used to the power then think about modding her up....i'll post pics as soon as i can

ahh, never mind i was thinking that u had something and was going to suggest wait and save up some more money to ge the 05 or even maybe the 06, but i guess your kinda hurtin for a car right now, if u got a GTO, doesnt matter what it is(04,05,06) would it be brand new or used?

yeah thats what i really wanted to do.....i had the rover running descent then without noticing the temp gauge smoke al over and after i turned her off didnt want to start again when cooled....i'll check comp and plugs first then if ok i'll look at the inj's...most probably the sleeves are scarred up..haha......yeah i really wanted to score the LS2....its a used one with like 10,000 miles...i guess if it doesnt run fast enough i'll save and do some engine work to her

for less than $1500 my GTO is faster than the same automatic stock 05, (12.9 na / / 12.0 75shot) I dont like the old school Pontiac looking dual snorkel hood or the rear bumper so the 04 works for me. I paid $20k for it last year with 2800miles on it. Your taste may vary.

yeah the hood scoop things are allright...but i really liked the dual tips mounted far apart on the 05 on up...but i can get that taken care of at a local muffler shop no problem....yeah my main concern was the price of vehicle and i probably wont do anything but like a k and n untill she's paid off so it will give me plenty time to save and by then i'll have a second vehicle....it will also give me plenty time to debate on FI versus NO2...but thats awesome to be laying 12's down for under 1500
