Default Why so slow?

With a rated 350 HP (more than the 325 of an F-body) and not that much more weight why is it 1 sec slower in the 1/4 mile then an F-body?

If it was the 6speed it could have just been the driver. Plus the IRS...

Replace the IRS with a higher ratio unit, reinfoce the bushings/arms that hold the IRS unit. Slap the nitto's on and put a hurting on that clutch.

goldenvelvet - Where did you see that?

I don't think the extra hp matters. The LS1 engine is rated @ 325hp in Ram Air trim...GM underrated it though. In reality, it puts out 345-350hp at the fly. GM can't possibly have it on par with the corvette when they first introduced it in '97 - '98. I think other experienced f-body owners would agree.

Whats the weight on the GTO? And doesn't it have a two-piece driveshaft?

Couple the 3700lb weight with 2 piece (heavy)drive shaft, swing arm style IRS, crap clutch and probably some awful factory programming (Torque management, ignition advance curve & A/F ratio) on the computer and you get 1 sec slower.

v8 ute:

So what you are saying is there is a lot of room to improve upon the GTO?

P.S. I would love to have the ute here in the US. Some times I dont know what my beloved GM is thinking. Can I live my ute dreams vicariously through you?

Sure there's plenty of room for improvement.
With some decent pipes, Air filter, maybe Cold Air Induction improvement and fine tuning the stock combo with LS1 Edit (most likely Holden specific, like we have here). You will get it too run easy low thirteens or High 12's.
Fixing up the Suspension with stiffer bushes etc will net better gains as well as improved handling and tyre life.

I got my ute to 13.1 in bolt on form and couldn't be bothered persuing that path any longer so Now have Ported Heads and TR230 cam Vig 3200 hi-stall etc, still sorting out the tune etc, but I love it.

1. They have not tested a US Spec Monaro. The Monaro that HAS been tested has a different spec engine than what the North American GTO will have.

2. Curb Weight, as told to Autoweek, is 3580lbs. That is 200 or so more than a F-body. We all know a WS6 will run 13.2's in the quarter. So, given 2 tenths for 200 more lbs, then 13.4's should be VERY attainable IF the motors were equal. I have a feeling the GTO will have a more powerful motor than the LS1 F-body.

www.cars.com has the transam coupe weight @ 3499lb's.

doesn't sound like the GTO will be too far off.

if the car does ~104mph in the quarter, that's cool.

if it handles better than the best handling Fbody (cuz of IRS) that's cooler. . .

if it can be had for $30k or less, then it's worth buying.

otherwise, why bother w/ a slower, worse handling car for ~$35k when you can get a cobra.

My T/A coupe weighs 3477. Just look at your registration. It has the weight on there.

Check out that thread. That car is a Middle Eastern Caprice SS with the low po LS1 and it weighs more than a GTO and has an automatic.

Check out the times.
