Default Friend is looking at a GTO

A friend of mine is looking at buying a GTO but heard they had a 2 piece driveshaft. Someone told him one of the first mods to do is get an aluminum driveshaft and then upgrade the half shafts??

Is this true?
I thought I had seen bolt-on GTOs running at least low 12s but I never heard of the drivehaft or half shafts being so weak?

anyone ever had problems with either on a modded gto?

everyone ive talked to says replace cvs then axle shafts. i know of people with over 450 to the wheels and there on the stock driveshaft. ive got 392 RWHP and im on the stock driveshaft aswell. its not as weak as people make it out to be, but its not the strongest in the world either.

thats B.S. tell your friend to get the car he will love it...yes it has a 2 piece driveshaft but its fine ..im running almost 500 to the wheels and im at 12.0 1/4 mile with 4-500 extra pounds of stereo equiptment.i have not had any problems ...and i have a bunch of guys around here that are about the same and no problems...

eventually he might need to replace the shafts and joints but, when your beating the **** out of any car your gonna break stuff.the GTO is a great car..

There are many 10 second GTO's out there on the stock DS, shafts and stubs. They are not as weak as people think, or the aftermarket companies try to make them out to be.

the driveshaft has a large rubber u-joint in a way, good and bad

helps keep down the vibs but weak in strength

I'm gonna be pushin 500 rwhp and i'm not worried about it

The stock drive shaft is stronger then most think. Also, many people have had bad vibration problems with one piece shafts at high speed. The main reason for the two piece is that the tranny output and rear input are not perfectly aligned. This causes the high speed vibration many get with the one piece. The fix is shimming the rear to get the correct alignment.

Maybe 3.91 rear pinion gear as a first mod, but not driveshafts or anything like that. Obviously most will say bolt-on parts should really come first.

Whoever told your friend that is an idiot, and both of you should stop listening to what they have to say about GTO's.

I'm putting down 385 rwhp and have the stock axles/driveshaft/etc and it's absolutely fine. I'll worry about the driveshaft and axles when I push over 550 whp, not before.
