Default What 2004-2006 GTO mods have you done?

Hey guys great site. I was just reading everything as a guest and decided to register as you guys seem cool and dont give the usual "Do a search" answer. I just got my 06 GTO on wednesday and I am in love! It is truly a fun car to drive and fairly quick for a stock car. So of course I've been googling everything from exhaust to turbo systems to FAI's but find it hard to find any HP gain numbers.

I'm mostly just gonna do some relatively inexpensive boltons for now since im not rich. So I figured I would ask you, the people who have actually bought the products and hopefully recieve some helpful feedback. Such as, the brand of the part, roundabout cost, HP gain if it was dynoed or how it felt in the seat of the pants. Or feel free to just spout off which parts you recommend getting in which order for the best bang for the buck. I know one of my first mods will probably be a catback for a slightly louder note while keeping it comfortable inside, so feel free to recomend something.

I have been a musclecar enthusiest for years and have decent knowledge in the motor department, but unfortunatly its all from the old era. I dont know much about the LS series.

Thanks again guys!

Ken

I'd start with Long Tubes, high flow catted connecting pipes and a cat back exhaust,
K&N air filter, then go some nitrous (either the nitro Dave's plate kit, or the halo dry kit)

good luck

see my sig for my info

The popular mods seem to be the Long tube headers with a full exhaust, LPE intakes, tuned and then a cam. most people see over 400rwhp with those few mods. toss on a 100 shot and your talking some mean street power right there.

Headers can be purchased as cheap as $300, and a magnaflow cat-back can be purchased for right at $400 from www.completeexhaust.com BUT you have to call him and talk to the guy personally to get the magnaflow discount.

www.texas-speed.com has really good deals on cam kits that will inclde the cam, required springs and new pushrods.

I say either go with a K&N intake or a LPE, both are pretty close in comparison with the LPE just edging out in the long run with there heat shield. www.lingenfelter.com is the place to pick them up.

I have personalyl seen guy run the dynotune nitrous kit with no problem. nothing is wrong with those specialty kits but your paying more for a few words added into a part description. buy a cheap kit to get the bottle and basic crap and then just buy the plate alone and save yourself $100's of dollar's.

HAHA NVigR8, I KNEW someone was gonna do that lol.

Thanks guys, great replies so far.

The reason I wanted to go just catback for now is that it looks like im looking at around 2500 give or take for a good full exhaust. too much for me right now. Will probably upgrade the forward of the cat further down the road. Read that long @ss post from 2005 about intake temps with the LPE and it all looks good and ill probably get that one, i just wasnt sure if anything better came out since then.

Next im gonna do a search for the MAF screen removal to see benefits and drawbacks cause im sure that one has been beat to death already and dont want you guys to repeat it.

Thanks,
Ken

Actually your far from the truth there. you can pick up an entire exhaust for under $1000 and install it yourself...

get the cat-back from the link I posted above and find the rest on Ebay for dirt cheap. Like I said before, Pacesetter headers can be had for $250 brand new from a dealer.

They show $763, but I would bet its around $400 if you will call him and tell him you got his address from a forum. then he will give you like a 40% discount.

I would wait on the cat back. Its only good for a couple of HP anyway when close to stock. Get the longtubes, some kind of intake, and a tune. Headers and the stock catback actually flow and sound pretty good.

Once you do a cam, then do a cat back. Unless you want a different sound.

Thanks,

I would avoid playing around with your MAF screen with the mods you plan on. It will offer you very little benefit with the possibility of a lot of problems.

^^^^ yeah, i heard they have clearence issues, causing one guys car to start on fire(steering shaft rubber boot i think).

https://ls1tech.com/forums/midwestern-members/664191-dont-use-pacesetters-gto-s.html

does anyone know why the 05-06 air intake from LPE is $120 cheaper than the 04 model? can i get a 05-06 to fit a 04 model?

if you load your car up with Ebay parts,
god will hate you (and you will hate yourself for it too)

for the headers,
go Kooks, (slp if you wanna save a little cash)
don't worry about the cat back for now
maybe even throw in a set of remote cutouts (that's what I would have done in hindsight)

as far as de-screening the maf,
I wouldn't bother with that unless you are spraying a dry nitrous shot across it.

and for gto info,
you will find alot more (less corrupted by the "F-Body" guys) over at LS1 GTO . com / LS2 GTO . COM
(especially when it comes to fittment and specific products, the overall technical info here is better tho)

don't get me wrong,
there's lots and lots of info here,
but lots of info that's only correct for the f-body and vette.

good luck

I suspect that it is more trouble than it is worth to try and get an LPE CAI for an '05/'06 GTO to work on an '04 GTO. It seems odd that there would be a $120 difference between the two. I am trying to recall what the configuration difference is between the years, but apparently it is getting late because I am drawing a blank. Sorry...I wish I could be more of a help.

I can provide the modifications and vendor names, but I am not going to provide the associated costs due to the fact that I may become physically ill if I see how much money I have spent on my baby.

Modifications to Date:

                                  Formato Tune - 374 Hp / 367 ft-lb @ rear wheels

The next modifications planned are as follows:

Futral Motorsports out of Walker, LA is slated to do the above work. Last week I received an email from Allan Futral who indicated that the Trick Flow heads have been cast, and will be CNC ported/polished and assembled soon. So we are just waiting on the heads to get the project under way. Once all is said and done, I will post the final results.

                                            -K

You don't get an intake tube for the LS2, you reuse your stock one. LS1 gets a new silcone tube.

Ding, the 05-06 just basically get a filter and a heat shield and the required parts to bolt them up and get rid of the stock air box. the 04 models get and entire intake tube to go with the filter and shield.

Really? I have only heard that they just need a good coating and that is there only problem. Every F-body owner I know has Pacesetters and they fit great and perform just a good. but I wouldnt get them anyways, I dont beleiev in buying the cheapest part. Im usually about a middle-upper price fella.

If you want to have fun in your goat other than driving in a straight line. You could do some of the simple things that I have done to transform mine in to a curve carver. I started off with a set of Koni Yellow double adjustable front stuts. With single adjustment rear Koni yellows. Pedders camber adjustable radius rod bushing to keep the frontend in place. Set of Hotchkis swaybars, extra set of stock rims with Hoosier R6 DOT road race tires. Makes the GTO alot of fun on any road course or Auto-cross.
