Default Downside to overfilling oil??

I've read recommendations to overfill the LS1s w 1/2 to 1 full quart of oil b4 racing/autocrossing events.

There has 2 b some downside, right? Otherwise why wouldn't everyone overfill, why wouldn't GM for that matter if it prevents engine damage (warranties).

The last thing I want is to spin a bearing, but just adding a 1/2-1 quart seems to good to be true.

What do your experience guys think?

Sam? Mitch? Other knowledgable guys?

Downside? It will burn it. You will come away with a lot of soot on the rear bumper cover.
I ran my street car at 7qts with a filter all the time.

Me too. I run mine 1 quart over at all times.

It makes a bigger mess when the blower pushes dipstick out?

Put extra quart in last dec for Road Atlanta and just left it in. Didn't see no reason to drain it.

I guess my feeble attempt at humor didn't make much of an impression.

What I was trying to get at is IF you have a power adder (blower, turbo, NO2) over filling will increase the crank case vent problem where you blow the dipstick out. (because the oil level is now above the bottom of the dipstick tube in the pan) But I always run an extra 1/2 to 1 qt, I just put a breather on my catch can to fix it.

+1. The way I see it, if you do not go overboard with adding extra, the engine will handle burning it off. Main reason I add some extra on the track is to help with protection at higher RPM for prolonged periods.

I read on one of the road race forums that LT1s can actually over heat if you over fill them. I need to verify this with my buddy, but just in case I thought I'd share.....

I used to run 1/2 to one Qt over when running hard. this always kept oil in the pan and the bearing alive when running over 6,000 non stop

Mark RR guys don't run power adders

just ordered 7 quarts of Redline 5w30; i'm a big autocrosser and want to do an upcoming event at Pocono, and maybe Limerock if I can get my high speed tires in time.

After reading enough about this, I'm going to use the truck filter and drop in all 7.

Get yourself some KONIS!! When did the SCCA switch f bodies from F stock to A stock (or is it just the SSes/WS6es)?? (This is in response to your sig, not your post, but I would consider mixing in at least 3 quarts of RL 10W-40 with those other 4 qts. of 5W-30 for summertime open track/time trial/HPDE events!)

Yea, you are so right. I need to get some Koni's ASAP.

SS/WS6 F-Bodies are A-Stock, all 1996 - 2002. Its such a poor classification, and a lot of people are pushing to have them moved to FS.

Redline 5w30 performs very well from what I understand per BITOG and Patman, and it runs pretty thick also.

Would anyone else recommend a RL 10W40/5W30 mix?

Just got back from 2 days at Watkins Glen and plenty of high rpm driving....no issues whatsoever with overheating. As a matter of fact, I was very impressed with how good the engine ran, never came close to overheating. I was able to get my lowly LT1 Z-28 faster through the Esses than I did in my Z-06 last year. That track is AWESOME! Heading to Boston next Saturday for Devens and the 1.6 mile autocross track. Back to Watkins in August. Can't wait!

I might see you there, that track was a blast last month, and I ran it on street tires

Now i have slicks, so it should be a blast!

I think my next oil change i'm gonna add 6 quarts instead of 5.5..i usually have to add half a quart or so in between oil changes...so i figure even if it is a little over filled it will burn it off anyways..Plus not to mention that i'm kinda sick of having half a quart left over after every oil change..when i end up adding it anyways later on..
