Default Balancer Removal Question

When I swapped in my balancer, I had the motor out of the car and just put a bolt through the flexplate to the engine stand to keep the crank from moving.

In the car, do I need to "stop" the flexplate? Or can I put the car in park (or in drive and let the weight of the car hold it?) or would that be bad for the automatic transmission?

I'm pretty sure the engine will still rotate.

You could always remove the starter and stick a screwdriver or piece of metal through one of the flex plate holes and it'll pin itself against the block

I've done that once. Until I bought the flex plate tool

The screwdriver method should work fine. A friend of mine needed a flex plate tool and made 3 or 4 when he did and gave the extras away to friends. They work really well and don't slip out like a screwdriver. You can never have too many purpose built tools in your box that you will only use 1-2 times in this lifetime. lol

A good impact should break it loose quick enough that it won't spin the engine.

I'll try that first. It's an ARP with red loctite on it.

I bought one of these:

Getting the balancer off is pretty easy. I used this tool and a block of wood to get it back on.

Default Balancer Removal Question

There is a tool that bolts in where the starter goes (after you remove the starter), it has 5 teeth which engage the ring gear on the flex plate, it very effectively holds the crank from turning.

These are the exact tools I used recently.. the guy that sells them is a member on here, just can't think of his name. Made my install a breeze, way easier than expected.

I used a screw driver. Put in neutral and presto.

Tomorrow I'll get the cam swap done. Everything is out now.
