Default Blown head gasket-and head, opinions wanted.

I’m trying to help a friend’s friend and any opinions would be appreciated.

Iron block with Trick Flow heads, studs, Cometic .060 MLS gaskets. Procharger, blow through carburetor. Ignition coils inside, MSD wires through a hole in the firewall.

700 RWHP. Engine well built by an experienced shop. Proper torques, deck surfacing, head gaskets on correct, etc. All new parts.

This cylinder blasted right through the head gasket, grooved the head and DENTED the intake valve face. This happened on a chassis dyno during a pull.

I have my own theory but I’d like to see what you guys come up with.

Detonation would be my first guess although the combustion chamber doesn't show it. I have a 6.0 that I bought that first torched a head the same as that, Then once the head was repaired was put on the dyno again with the same tune and that time it broke a main cap and took out the crankshaft. (most likely happened along with the previous damage and not caught at that time) They had 27* timing @ 15lbs of boost.....I bought it after all this and still need to get it back together.

Wowzers, that's a lot of damage. I say upgrade to steel caps after 500 crank HP.

wow looks like it eroded the head. maybe a void in the casting? the valve looks like it was pulled up rather than beaten. whats the cam look like?

The cam is fine and will be re-used. Yeah, the valve is a mess.

Since you mentioned the coils were behind the firewall and the wires ran through it, I wonder if ignition signal is crossing the wires.

I am guessing it went lean under boost.

Is it using the 6 bolts set up or is it just the standard 4 per cylinder?

What does the piston look like?

No, six bolt heads but not a six bolt block.

More info:

-Running E85.

-Boosted to 12PSI.

-No intercooler.

-Pistons looked clean but this cylinder was "cleaner", perhaps from all the coolant being sucked in. Lots of coolant out the exhaust.

More info. This motor was making 700 RWHP which I guesstamite is 850~900 at the crank. Cast crank, stock powder metal main caps. With this power, he's gonna have bigger problems down the line.

Now, I was looking for opinions before expressing my own opinion. I also think there was some crossfiring from the ignition wires being together. The owner is going back to valve cover mounted coils.

I'm gonna guess that there was an issue with the tune; maybe a little too aggressive with the timing or something.

Any more pics of the valves? I've heard of some of the TFS LS7 intake valves tuliping in power adder applications, but haven't seen it first hand.

Was the engine together and running at that power level for a while? Or was it a fresh build when this occurred?

It was a fresh build, it had done a few pulls on the chassis dyno. This happened on the dyno.

Do you have the dyno chart showing AFR...?

What was WOT timing...?

Is that cylinder #1 or #8...?
