You mean it does not have a sprag on the direct drum.
Has a roller clutch on the on the reaction carrier, most do, except 1964 and 1965 th400's. I used to run a 36 element sprag there, found a low mileage reaction carrier. Usually 1965 and low mileage don't exist these days. I don't know that the roller clutch there is a high failure item.
You're right about keeping the 32 spline output. You're going to need a counter bored yoke (not yolk). Makes no sense to track down a 28 spline output shaft and extension housing.
Think it's necessary to bolt the yoke to the output shaft? I ask because the yoke was seized to the output shaft and I had to impact it off and in the process jacked up the threads beyond repair. It seems you know transmissions fairly well, so what do you set your forward and direct clutch clearances to? Sorry bout all these questions, but I'm definitely a noob with transmission internals.

You bolt the yoke to the output shaft you end up with a broken trans case.
As the rear suspension moves up and down the yoke moves in and out of the transmission. On a truck the slip yoke is in the middle of the driveshaft, thats why the yoke can be bolted on.
With a th400 I'd set all the clutches to .040 or close, it's not like a 4L60E where clutches come on and release during some shifts. On this trans you don't have to worry about shift overlap. Forward is always on when it's in drive so it can vary quite a bit and be ok.

You mean like one of these here?
Hardened billet with bolt on straps for easy removal.
Ok, so I got the case, pan and pump cleaned up today. Pulled the pump apart and the gears looked fine. I'm not sure if it's good practice to replace as needed, or just do it anyway since I'm already here. Thoughts?
Ok, haven't done anything with the car for the past couple of weeks. Reason is, it was playing time AKA vacation. Below had been my scenery. So I came back home with renewed interest in the car, planned to bang out this Th400 tonight.....and hit a snag. Transmission store sold me the wrong torrington bearing, and stopped me in my tracks. Should be able to finish up by tomorrow. This has been dragged out far too long, and now I'm itching to get the car back in action.
I've been in the business for 40 years. This requires a phone call. There are myths and mistakes from so many. This should only be about doing the trans the right way.... Not about the money.... I am offering you some valuable info... Because i love the job....

Just wanted to update. Tranny is done, cut the ears off this morning. Crossmember should be here either today or tomorrow, and the install will be this weekend.
Im in the process of stop my car to do the swap from 60e to th400. I find out some interesting info. for the DS. I can not share the link here because they are not sponsors here. I going to PM you the Info.
So, I had planned on finally starting the car today to see if this transmission works. Went to bolt up the converter, but found the holes to be too small. Now Just on principle alone I feel that an expensive sfi flywheel should not require any customization whatsoever....no, its not the end of the world but still. Opinions?
So you didn't notice how big the converter bolts were beforehand? FTI converter bolts that they Supply with their converters fit my 98 flex plate just fine. Only thing I needed was that pilot extension.

Evidently not. And I'm not using Fti, or a 98 flywheel.
