Aluminum 441 build on corn
#61
I was going through this build post of mine and it stunned me that I started all this in 2014! This build is taking a lot longer than I could have ever imagined, but I guess it's better it's going slow than not at all. I haven't given up nor will I. I want to clear a few things up on the build though. The heads are going to be ls7 castings done by WCCH after selling and buying new bare castings. The fuel system will consist of the walbro 450 in tank e85 pump. The injectors, fuel rails and fpr i haven't decided on what to do with yet. It will not have a powerglide as I had originally planned, but instead a th400 that will more than likely be over built for my application and a custom stall from PTC. I already have a spooled 12 bolt with 35 spline axles in the car so I should be good there. I will be running Viking front coil overs and the rears that are already on the car are Viking shocks with stock springs. Now that some of this is cleared up I'd also like to mention that things may change again as the build progresses, but I will keep everyone informed in here if that does happen. I'm ready to really get everything ironed out and get the car back running and on the drag strip this year?!... Maybe next spring?!... Lol. Honestly I'm just going to plan for spring 2017 to have it all done and ready to go. That will give me plenty of time and if it's not done by then than I might as well sell it all and start over with something else

It looks like a good start of great build. Keep it going man. I know how you feel, I started my build in Aug. of 2014, and I'm just about done. Fired her up for the first time last week, and let me tell you, what a great feeling. I hope you keep it up.

Yep I was following your build and I seen the start up videos recently. That thing sounds wicked man. Hope she performs well on the strip!

Kind of at a stand still for a while until I get more time/ funds. Here's a few pics of what I got accomplished over the weekend. I got the old subframe out of the car and going to be installing a tubular k member with manual steering rack along with drag shocks

Alright the build is finally going to start rolling. I ended up sending my LS7 castings to WCCH and they've had the heads for about 3 weeks now, so I'm hoping to get them back sometime this week. The motor will be finished up and ready to set back in the subframe hopefully by next week. I'm concentrating on getting all the major components bought now and will concentrate on the small stuff a little later.

Going to see about having the powerglide sent off and built this week as well.
EDIT: ended up going th400 with a tbrake

Heads should be back this week. WCCH called and said that PAC had a machine go down and is the reason for the long wait. I received my lifters and fuel injectors a few days ago, but still waiting on the intake and fuel rails to get here. I ordered from Maryland Speed and I hear that they are known to take their time with shipments...

Headers
Benny, is this new set up going in your 01 WS6? If so, it's perfect. Are these Kooks headers? Its what I run in my new combo. Clearance and fitment are excellent.
Is it going to be running this season? I'm finally testing the new combo as soon as the track opens up here in Illinois. Both at GLD or Byron tracks.

So I've got a question for everyone since I'm getting prepared to measure PTV clearance and measuring for pushrod length. Is it really necessary to use checker springs and solid lifters to measure pushrod length or am I ok going off of my zero lash measurement and then adding my desired preload? I believe Johnson recommends thirty five thousandths preload for the ST2126SLR short travel lifters. I've seen a lot of people do it this way and end up perfect on pushrod length, but then you have the guys also saying to use checker springs and solid lifters... any first hand experience and or input is much appreciated.
EDIT: I should have also mentioned that I plan on using the clay method for PTV clearance

The lifters are usually fine as long as the clay isnt to thick to start with. You will need a checker spring or some other way to hold valve up while turning motor over. You could use rubber bands and a piece of coat hanger or something over the top of head to hold valve up snug while rolling motor over. Even with solids in there I roll motor ove 4 revolutions so i get 2 cycles on both valves, so just roll it a few times till your sure the lifter plungers aren't depressing.

Rockers are done, well minus 3, 3 of the 16 were really tight and wouldn't spin freely. I used the straub bushing kit and they say that some of the LS7 rockers are tight and need machined, however I measured inside diameter of the rockers with a caliper and they are within spec so I'm going to order some spare bushings and give it another try.
