Default Adhesive removal - how?

Attached is an older picture of the trim on the front of my '02. I had bonded it back once upon a time with GM gel Adhesive. It has since come back loose.

How can I remove the ORIGINAL adhesive sticky tape and the GM adhesive i used"? If i were to re-tape or glue it down, there will still be a gap due to the old product being between the molding and the car.

can I use something like "Goof Off" to remove the residue left behind? I dont want to dink up the finish on the trim or car.

whats the proper product to use to re-stick this to the car?

thoughts?

Use a heat gun or hair dryer to soften the old adhesive and get a plastic spatula or blade(the type that comes in the bondo kits) to scrape it off.

I've used WD40 before, it works well and doesn't harm the paint.

Heat and WD40 is the best option.

what to use to re-adhere? 3M tape? but wont the thickness of the tape leave a gap between the trim and the car?
