Default Help me plan my Top End Package

Hello guys,

Looking for a bit of help, as im new to the LS world. I just sold my 630hp r32 GTR skyline that i built myself, so I am mechanically capable, but ive never fooled around with any push rod v8 before, and I am still learning.

2 weeks ago i picked up a 99 c5 corvette which i plan to autocross. I have upgraded to c6 Z06 wheels and tires, Flotech LT headers, and Vararam intake. I am buying Aldan American coil overs soon which should be much better than the leaf spring set up.

I want to start planning/looking for a top end package to bump up the ponies flowing from this glorious engine. Its a 5.7L LS1.

So far I have been eyeballing the TFS-K306-515-460 trick flow package, which I would compliment with an LSX intake manifold. From what I have read most people kinda **** on this kit saying its expensive for the "exaggerated" output numbers, and their are many better options that will make more power for less money.

I would like to be around 450-500 whp, and obviously spend as little as possible to do it. That being said I understand the importance of not buying cheap shitty parts, and want good quality stuff. I am looking for some opinions on the best way to do this. Is their a good vender who sells a package on here? Is the ported LS6 stuff gonna get me where I want to be.

I have been searching on here and corvetteforums.com, but its difficult to find any opinions because most of what you get is "that packed seems overpriced, their are way better ways to make more power" but no suggestions on those ways.

Please be slow with me, As I dont yet understand push rod angles and what parts work with what. Still reading and learning. Would appreciate any links that would help catch me up.

450 rwhp is going to be a lot easier and less expensive than 500 rwhp. With that said are you wanting to buy a pre-assembled heads and cam package from a reputable vendor, or would you consider buying used and piecing it together yourself? Obviously buying used will be cheaper, which is why I ask

i would actually prefer to buy used and piece something together that might ever be more suited to what I want. My only real issue is I don't yet under stand what works with what yet. For example what push rid works with what rocker, and required lengeths and such. I kinda get lost in the combustion chamber stuff too, I've come from a world of low compression big boost, so trying to figure out what compression works with my fuel limits here is difficult.

any suggestions on some basic specs to look for if I did want to try to see 500whp?

Mamo Motorsports. Look online, he has a site. He is located in Valencia, CA, very close to Airflow Research, his former employer.

Tony Mamo is good but higher than wiz khalifa smoking weed. He quoted my buddie a top end for his motor for 5500 dollars....

Contact Brian Tooley for some TEA/TFS heads finished by him. They've made over 500 rwhp on stock bottom end more.

Contact Pat G for a cam... this guy knows his stuff and his cams perform period..

This should get you to 450-470 whp and is very affordable from Hawk's Motorsports.

Texas Speed is also very price competitive.

The lowest cost will be to carefully piece together intake, heads, cam fromm used parts.

Our kits are 100% inclusive of parts needed for install, both the hawks and the tfs kits arent. And ours are a tad less $$ overall as well!!

Everyone has had to step up their game this yr.

^^^^^^^^^^^^AGREED!!^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

And Nobody provides more service
AFTER the sale than Tony Mamo.

Study Darths Ghost Hawk Build and get a PHD in SBE LS1
Build Education.

I also have a 99 C5 with 151K Miles, which I have owned &
Modified for The last 10 years. The goals for a durable and competitive
Auto X Car are a lot different from a 500 RWHP 6500+ RPM car.

My suggestion is to start with the very best Heads you can afford.
The Best LS1 Heads are the MMS 220s, that said the MMS 223
Sportsmen Heads are very good Heads for the money.
You want wicked throttle response and power from 2500-6000 RPM
and better Heads (MMS) will allow you to make the same power with a
~224/230 cam VS 230/236 cam with some of the aforementioned
Heads, Put an LS6 Intake on in the interim if you must (apologies to
Big Hammer) easy enough to Chang out later for FAST 92 or 102,
Combined with a Ported OE LS2 TB, easier to tune then NW 102 and
Much less expensive and will flow all the Air you need and then some.
Take your time and do it right the first time.
That's my .02 and a good start for now.

I dont really see the need to spend so much extra money for nearly the same power that can be made on a better budget, but to each their own.

Saying Mamo heads are the best ls1 heads is a bold statement.... I like to go by facts and reality. The TFS heads have made over 500 rwhp threw a stalled automatic F body with a hydraulic roller and a fast intake on the stock bottom end. I'm talking about chris1313 silver camaro that drags the rear bumper to a 10.0 e.t in the quarter. It is what it is.

You'll gain more by properly piecing together your supporting mods then worrying about who's heads are going to make 5 more hp.

If you want a complete package though email me. Ours are custom tailored for the budget and build so listing all of them would be difficult to say the least.

After doing a "budget build" and hating it and then going through Tony, I would argue that the expensive build was the cheaper build, because I only had to build it once. Nothing like going through three sets of heads because it's "cheap".

500 RWHP is not cheap or easy. If it was, it wouldn't be hand picking CHRS1313 as an example - and his wasn't cheap either
