If the computer is set at the right shift points, then leave it in drive. If you do not want to go inside the transmission right now, then adding the TransGo HD2 Shift kit will help with the 3rd gear clutch to live much longer by the Shift kit increasing the holding of 3rd gear by apx. 300%. This is the weak point in the stock 4L80E. If you are going to rebuild this unit, then there are other ways (if you do not use the TransGo HD2) to get the full apply of the 3rd gear clutch pack. What year transmission is in here?

PBA, when you say drive, you mean D3 and let the computer shift correct?
Or, if manually shifting, using D1,D2,D3

D3, per my long time trans builder. It manually engages the low roller clutch? Either way he said do it every single time. No 4l60e failures yet!!!

So the 60E does the same thing?

Not from the factory, 4L60E's require a modified 2-3 shift valve along with a
valve body mod.

The 4L80E does this by design.

It's the Overrun Clutch that comes on to help support the Overdrive Roller Clutch in a 4L80E in D3. Though Sonnax does have a kit to keep the Overruns on in ALL gears but 4th......http://www.sonnax.com/parts/4496-sma...utch-valve-kit

In a modified 4L60E, The Overrun Clutch also comes on.....But to support the Forward Sprag in 1st & 2nd while the shifter is in D3.

So the advantage would be you could leave it in D4 and be rough on it from 1st through 3rd without worrying about killing the OD roller clutch?

You got it! I haven't run one of these yet or even seen the parts in person, But I think it puts straight line pressure to the Overruns that is routed through a valve.....4th gear oil strokes the valve & exhausts Overrun Clutch.

This is probably more suited to heavy duty applications, Creates new possible leak points.

The 80e in my Nova took a crap on the strip a few months ago.

I had it in Drive (D4) and launched. I spun when it shifted into 2nd. I let out and got back in it. I think that it had upshifted to 3rd or 4th when I lifted because I was doing 65 at the top of 1st, and then downshifted hard into 2nd when I got back into it. It acted like it was in neutral in 2nd. It had been acting strange on the street for a few weeks, slipping on the 3-2 shift but I assumed it was tire spin.

Now the trans will not move forward in Drive (D4). If I put it in D3, it will drive first 3 gears OK. It also doesn't have reverse.

Stock 80e with transgo HD2 at ~800whp with 150k miles and 2 years of heavy abuse. Now I'm having trouble finding someone to do a mild performance rebuild on it for a decent price.

JoeNova You could rebuild it yourself. They are easier than the 4L60E to do. A lot of information out there on these.
