Default T5's

looking at throwing together a lil beater S10 and would like it to be a stick so im gonna ask. theres a local u pull it yard here that has a few 4th gen camaros with junk v6's but they do have 5spds in them is there a reason besides there prone to high HP failure not to use them. in other words is it possible to bolt them to a 4.8 with a simple bellhousing swap?

Short answer is YES! It works.

If you are localish to NoVA I'll take another if there are multiples. Since the Gen4 is an oddball T5 people don't know what to do with them and you should be able to get them in the 100-150 range.

I doubt it. As far I as I know, the T5 ceased production in 2010 with the V6 Mustang as a OE transmission. The GM trucks went to the NV1500 from the T5 around 1996 and GM stopped using the T5 in 2002 with the V6 Camaro.

I was referring to the 4 cylinder trucks that once used a T5 but went to NV1500 in 1996.

Test drive a V6 S10 T5. The ratios are annoying.

Pretty much any V6 or 4 cylinder transmission is going to be poorly matched to a properly running LS, even a 4.8 in your 2WD S10.

A V8 Camaro T5 from a third gen is a lot better drive. Or a TKO. Gearing a project the best you can is money well spent.

I disagree with that blanket statement. It really depends on what tires/gears the OP is running.

I have had great success with the S10 T5 Non-WC behind my C10. ~2000RPM at ~70 is a thing of beauty. In all fairness, I do not leave hard in 1st. 2nd gear rips to 6500 are FUN!

Adding good luck finding a Gen3 Camaro V8 T5. TKOs are serious money, might as well go T56.

The beauty of the T5 is that they are easy to rebuild given any issues. A few beef up parts from 5speeds.com and you are in business!

Its the spacing between the lower 1st gear and 2nd/3rd gear compared to a unit designed to be behind a V8 which usually has a softer first gear thus making the spread closer and less rpm drop between shifts. There is a reason a 4 cylinder unit has a 4.03 or 3.97 1st gear whereas a V8 unit will be 3.35 at the most but most performance units are in the 2.xx's.

Again it depends what the OP wants to do, since it is a truck I am going to generally say that the lower 1st is a good thing for the street if he uses it as a truck. I would be pissed with a 2.XX 1st as I could not take off from a stop with 1500lbs of crap in the back w/o slipping the clutch. IMO creaping in 1st is a good thing for stop and go traffic or hauling heavy.

FWIW the Gen4 T5 ratios are as follows:
1st = 3.75
2nd = 2.19
3rd = 1.41
4th = 1
5th = .72

Good or bad ratio fitment will depend on your tire size and rear end ratio, which we (the forum) so far do not know.

A T5 behind a V8 in an application where towing or hauling stuff around is involved probably won't last very long.

That is what everyone says... But I am here as proof that it works just fine. 5-6 years and thousands of miles later on a used Non-WC T5. Been from DC to Dallas a couple times loaded each way. Carries 1 or 2 LS engines in the back when needed from the WV mountains.

Don't fear the T5.

How does one mount a 99 V6 Camaro's T5 to an LS? I have a 3899621 bellhousing (which I researched and confirmed is supposed to fit). I tried installing it on my T5 tonight, and the 4 bolts do not light up at all...Where did I go wrong?

https://www.hotrodworks.com/product/...ssion-adapter/

Use a Truck SBC bell w Speedway hydro TO bearing. Ideally NF2050 fly w SBC truck PP. Or you can use a LS1 or LS7 fly/pp/clutch, but you need additional spline spacers.

You will need a GM T5 tube style input shaft bearing retainer as well. The stock Gen4 hydro stuff may or may not work, I did not try it.

Look at some of my old posts in this section and I should have a complete parts list, this is cliffs notes. If you are seriously doing the conversion let me know and I'll walk you through the details. People claim to have done it, but I am the only one here that talks about it.

From other stats the Gen4 T5 should be good for 11s. Realistically that means a medium level 4.8 or 5.3 small tire and high rear end (3.73/4.10).

I'm new to this so please bare with me. I've done an LS swap but now I'm building a hot rod and plan to use a LS2 or 3. The problem I'm having is that the t56 or 6l80 trans are physically too big for my rod. FFR says I need to use a TKO 600 or 4l60e but the TKO's are very pricey.I would prefer to go manual. I'm wondering if I can bolt a V6 trans from a newer Camaro to the LS engine?

No, because the new V6 and the LS bellhousing bolt patter are different. The TKO 600 is not the best shifting transmission either. Some guys rave about using some sort of Nissan (350Z trans) behind the LS. I guess there is a guy making a custom flywheel and other parts to make it happen. Might be a good option for a light project. Do a search.

I wouldn't even if it could fit. The T5 is made of aluminum foil and beer cans.
