To Whom It May Concern
Starting this thread to track/share the progress of my build. Goal is to have one bad street rod that is pure American muscle. I hope to be responsive to this thread as feedback/questions/etc. occur. Thanks and have a good one.
This was the "for sale" picture. Bringing the car back to home to Texas. The car unloaded at my house Got the garage all cleaned up. It's ready to take on my wife's mustang lol First oil change done by me. All the original paperwork was in the glove box...a big plus for me when I bought the car. Found out it began its life here in Texas. Neat to be the one to return it here.
Taking the wife for a cruise with the T-Tops off Engine Bay in condition when I bought it. Has the K&N intake, a Thunder Racing MAF, and some kind of on demand tuning box of which brand I do not know Cut off the Magnaflow muffler and the y pipe. Going back with the Speed Engineering true dual over the axle kit. Drove it to work one Friday. Love seeing it outside my office window BMR strut tower brace and Strano MC brace. Also installed a SJM line lock
Welcome to the forum and boy what a nice looking SS you got right there, oh and I see she's in an around some FORD's, so everyone make way for the black sheep of the family One of the most satisfying things in my life was buying all the parts, building my own engine, doing all my own installations and seeing my car which sat for nearly seven years breath new life. I loved it so much that I bought another one to rebuild only this one is being built for drag racing!
Manual cars are drivers cars. So my to the automotive industry! PLEASE SAVE THE MANUALS.
Hey. I just finished building my 2001 SLP SS. It is very satisfying doing it yourself. These cars are a lot of fun to play around with. They can be a big test of your patients at times but they are worth saving. I am going to follow your build and chime in if I have something relevant to say. Like I mentioned, I just finished doing this so you can pick my old brain while I still remember what I did. Good luck.
So far, I removed the exhaust (ORY + Magnaflow) to make way for a new Speed Engineering true dual over the axle exhaust with 1 7/8" TSP long tube headers. I have replaced the stock LCA's, Upper/Lower Panhard bars, Tower brace, and Torque Arm with BMR Suspension parts. I also installed a SJM Line Lock kit and some extra gauge pod mounts. Torque Arm Installed Panhard Bars Installed LCA's Installed Tower Brace and Strano Master Cylinder Brace Installed Triple gauge cluster Installed Triple gauge cluster installed. No, this isn't the factory panel lol, i bought a replacement from Hawks as not to damage the original parts.
Removed the stock cooler so I don't have to worry about it leaking. Plus, just like look of engine bay without it. This is the cooler that I mounted behind air dam for power steering lines to run to. New higher Amp alternator. New starter Made some wheel blocks The car off the ground. All that clearance sure is nice when working on the car.
Found this sticker. Just had to have it Texas Speed 1 7/8 LTH's TSP plug wire covers I watch this guy on Youtube. Too cool of a hat to NOT buy Tinkering during a rain storm...always calming Gotta love having a shop dog.
Car is on dollies for a while...heart transplant in the works...more details to follow BMR K member. A-arms are on the way New lifters Wonder what this is for??? New fuel rails came in.
You are moving right along. I think I missed what heads you are going to use. Mamo did the port work on my MSD Atomic as well. He does great work. Below is the link to my build thread. I just finished up most of the work on my car. You are going down pretty much the same path that I did. I can’t wait to see your car complete. Trust me, the rear tires are going to be the week link. Cheers.
To date, I'm waiting on rocker arms from Texas Speed. They are doing the final honing on the block and then we will start building up the short block. I think the short block will be done by end of April but not sure. Push rods will have to be measured for and then ordered so it will still be awhile before the engine is ready.
Parts that have been ordered but not received: FTP 104mm Lid, TSP 100mm MAF, Mighty Mouse Wild Catch Can, BMR A-arms, TSP 1.82 ratio rockers
Things to come as money allows: throttle body, QA1 double adjustable coil overs, front and rear bumper support replacements (midwest chassis), tuning of the car, injectors, fuel pump/line/filter/fittings, 9" rear end, wheels/tires.

Friday I got a lot of work done disconnecting harnesses, removing ECM, draining coolant, etc. I didn't have an engine hoist available so I called it a night. Spent Saturday cleaning up and putting tools away and slid the car back over so my wife's mustang can park in the garage...if you live in Texas you know how coveted garage parking is . Sunday I picked up an engine hoist from Harbor Freight...it is missing one of the casters, YAY # eyeroll...so calling them to get that part in. Hopefully by the time my A-arms come in from BMR, I'll be ready to pull it out. I also picked up some furniture dollies to help with engine removal. My plan is to do some frame painting while I've got it opened up, just to make it look nice and keep it rust free, etc. On a good note, my 104mm FTP air lid arrived on Saturday.
Spent Friday night having some fun. Drained coolant and started slowly disconnecting things Intake removed, lot of stuff unplugged. Goodbye air pump Driveshaft out Tower brace and strano brace removed. More stuff unplugged/disconnected.
Hey. I remember that day. The Harbor Freight dollies worked wonders getting the complete assembly to roll out. I used 3 of them. It gets tight getting it all to roll out between the engine hoist and the Jack stands. There always seems to be one wire that you didn’t disconnect.
Been there and done that and I get to go funny car again when it's time to sit her back down on the new power plant. I've gotten pretty comfortable at working from the ground but my joints and muscles say otherwise.
yeah, it's gotten even more interesting now. when i lived in KS i had a shop to work in. when we moved to TX for my job it was all i could do to find a two car garage within our budget. not impossible but def have to get creative. It's one of the reasons i always keep an eye out for anyone selling just a building down here around San Antonio lol.
Love seeing all y'alls pics of your engine pulls. gives me hope...and ideas
