Default Help me with a camshaft selection

Hey guys,

Thanks in advance for helping me pick a camshaft here. First time ever building a car and still learning.

I have a 2008 Trailblazer SS full weight

Has forged pistons rods and crank LS2 running Was milled .005 over bore so 4.005, stock 3.622 stroke 10.8:1 compression with 2cc flat top and valve reliefs

ARP main and head studs

10296 melling oil pump

Stock 243 heads 65cc chambers (no porting at all)

Completely stock valve train

4l80 rwd

Full e85

Holley hi ram

Stock stall converter for now

Stock 4.10 gears

I will be running an 85/96 turbo Borgwarner S485. Not sure what A/R is.

Will be primarily a street car/daily driver 90% of the time. Aiming for a 6 second 60-130 is the goal. I do plan to do some drag strip runs for fun maybe 5-10% of the time. Trying to make 900 wheel or so.

With the weight of the vehicle in mind and the 4L80 being a bit soft on first gear I want to retain some low end torque/response but still have good mid to top end range. Redline is 6800-7000 rpm.

Also not sure on a stall thinking 3800 is a good sweet spot.

Here are the cams I was recommended…

BTR Stage 2 turbo cam (220/23X .618"/.618" 113 LSA w/ LOBE LIFT @ TDC: 0.04422)

GPI SS2 (228/240.646"/.637" 112 LSA)

Cam motion 03-01-0068 (Duration at .050: 232/236115 Lobe Center Angle with a 111 Degree Intake Centerline 621"/.604")

LSXceleration Stage 2 Turbo Cam 2054622 (226/230 .625"/.625" HR114+4)

Let me know what you guys think

Id do the btr stage 2 turbo cam if those were my only options. Your hi ram is killing your low end by ALOT. I hope you still have the stock tbss intake as thats one of the best oem intake manifolds for cathedral port LS engines.

The larger the cam the less low end you will have. Couple that with a heavy suv, an intake manifold that loses hp and tq until over 6,000 rpm, and 4l80e with stock converter. It’ll be all top end and take forever to spool. Id also suggest a 36-3800 stall converter, that will really help with spool.

I’ll have to check it out but I can’t keep adding more cams to the mix 😂

I still have the TBSS intake but it’s ugly so that why I got the Holley hi ram. The BTR was my first choice but some have said it’s a little small for a 6.0 and more for a 4.8 or 5.3. I do agree I think a 3800 stall upgrade will be a good sweet spot

The Holley HiRam will lose much low and midrange power compared to the TBSS manifold. Form follows function.
You want it to look good, or run good?? i guess you made that choice.

I bought a TBSS intake for my wife's SSR with LS2. I don't give a damn what it looks like. I'm more of a bang for the buck type.

The tbss intake has been low 8’s so its proven but its ugly. You cant cam it like a light car, you have to account for that extra 1000lbs so the btr is perfect and the turbo will make power to at least 6,500-7,000. You want as much low end as possible. I like the 3800 stall its the limit for the street in my opinion

Do a search for shaved truck intakes. Many people have made them look good.

I’d ditched the Hiram and go TBSS manifold. I would limit lift to .625 and get CHE bushings for the stock rocker arms. I’d go either the BTR, Summit or CamMotion. I would also get Johnson linkbar lifters or gaterman for a budget linkbar lifter.

thanks for your input. I got the BTR on the way! And yeah I’m gonna get a solid 3800 and call it a day
