Default right cam size for the most power?

i am building an all motor 383 with a t-56 behind it. i've got a brand new short block. i have a pair of bare canfield aluminum heads. they flow 300+ cfm. the next big step which i'm not that familiar with would be the right cam. my compression is going to be around 10.5:1. i just want to know what size cam i should run to get the most power out of it?

Well, if you have forged components and dont mind a rough idle and dont care about being agressive at every stop light, a comp cam extreme energy cam will do great, hydrolic roller,

That would make you smile with these heads, especially the second grind, it will pull a bit more. You should make 500 FWHP with the right intake, carb and exhaust.

i called comp's cam help hot line. they told me to go with their magnum. its pn: 12-460-8. its like a 252/252 duration 600/600 lift with 110 lsa.
i personally thought that sounded kind of generic.

Why would you need forged components? What's the biggest cam you can run without forged components?

The thing is, at X amount of RPM stock components let go, and can only take so much abuse, some stock equipment has done crazy things on several occasions, but if you are building something with heads that flow that well and you know it will zing to 6500 RPM, you have better luck with forged parts knowing they will stay together, even on the occasional over rev. If you drive like I do, you need them.

both of those grinds looked almost the same..... the lift was a little different. are you sure the second one will be that much better?

i called comp cams cam help hotline. they told me to get their magnum retro fit cam part#: 12-460-8. its numbers are: 244/244 duration 600/600 lift with a 110 lsa. the numbers were big, but i haven't seen many cams with the same intake and exhaust lobes. i wasn't sure if it would make as much power as a split pattern???

That is a single pattern camshaft, the dual pattern is better for mild heads but in most cases they help with top end HP.

custom ground is the only way to make real power. don't use an off the shelf cam, talk to an engine builder.

Come on now, there are several off the shelf grinds that are excellent, but you do have a point, for PEAK power,i cannot argue.

I would be looking for a cam in the 238/242 or 242/246 range. As for your LSA recommendation, that would depend on what you would like your idle quality to be like. If you gave me some more details about the car and the goals that you have for it, I could spec you out a cam.

The tow grinds i reccomended above are close, but the SA and lift are the differences based on engine spec is how you would choose as 1997bird is saying.

yea, i see. the duration on those cams were appealing, but the lift wasn't that big. i think a custom grind is what i should do.

Yea, or you can get the second grind i showed you and do 1.6 rockers, which would make about 581/599 lift. But that is the easy way out
