Not much info., mine runs 9.00 @ 155 MPH in a 2700 pound 73 Z28 in Tucson. High and hot

Has Brodix heads, 6.8" Oliver rods, JE pistons 14 to 1, Comp roller cam, 4.25" Lunati crank. Don't regret building a truck block. Only inconvenience is the push rods and intake.

I have one with a 4.5" stroke, although it took a lot of clearancing it fits with steel rods but you could always run a shorter stroke and taller piston than you would in a normal 9.8 deck height block. It's also bored .060 over and from what I hear they can usually be bored .100 over maybe even a little more but they recomend sonic checking them once you get over .080. They are definetly worthwhile blocks if the price is right. I know its possible to get one into a fourth gen, but space is very limited. If you are looking for pictures I know there has been at least one that I know of on this forum.

4.25 stroke & +.060 is a easier setup for 496" but why? even if the block is free, you will still have a lot of money in a motor to get 496" when you can just start with a used merlin or whatever and build a 540 short deck for about the same money when you factor in the odd ball tall deck intake and longer rods.

That said, I have a 427 Truck block, 8.5 CR, 454 blower pistons, 14-71 blower, mild solid roller = 702 rwhp on 87 octane

If I had to do it over, I would find an ebay 4.5 bore block and build a 540 or 555...

yes, I know 702 rwhp isn't that great for a 500" motor, but it was at 17% under drive, 30 degrees timing, 11.0 AFR and only turning about 6600 rpm

also, with the tall deck, most headers aren't going to fit right.

I have one sitting on an engine stand ready to be started...I just kept it mostly stock with stock pistons and rods stock is a tq monster and its going in a 4x4 truck. BUT I think if I were to do it again I would have went with a standard deck just because the intake, alt bracket is a little different, pushrods, fitting issues etc. Good luck.

I'm not sure it would be worth $400. Not with all the trouble of getting a tall deck intake, distributor, pushrods, headers, etc........You can find a standard height block and not spend the extra money on the tall stuff.

You would need a tall deck intake, they do make intake spacers be able to use a std. deck intake. Most of the good TD intakes have the hole thru the intake for the dist. machined so that the distributor fits without the need for a dist. with an adjustable collar. Most cases you need pushrods to match your cam, true of any build. I used a hooker header for an early 70s camaro on my 77 camaro, 2" primarys they fit tight but wasn't a big deal, this was a 496" tall deck motor, went hi 9s in a 3700 # camaro ,just the way it went down the street. The tall deck makes it real nice to get a long rod in.I used a 6.535" h-beam scat rod. I used an SRP piston meant for a stock length rod (6.135) and a 4.250 stroke in a std. deck block. The only reason I pulled this motor was to go a lot quicker N/A. Had the same shop build me a 565"BBC

We have a 4.25 crank and 6.385 rod in my wifes low deck block. Of course, it has a real short JE piston and is around 10.5 cr.
