From the interwebs:
http://www.nautic-motors.fr/Engines.html
Look's like it was only the boat-moters that got forged crankshafts in the 8.1L. The L21 did get forged crank/pistons however.
The "first" marine 8.1L 496's came with a forged crankshaft... They later changed to a cast crank... Cant remember if it was just on the H.O version or not, but for sure there was a forged steel one made and run in production for the marine engine in the Mercruisers for a while

Why buy a 8.1 truck engine?
Its a better idea to get a standard deck height 454 and go from there.
If I am not mistaken the 8.1 is a tall deck block which cost more to build and could cause a lot of problems depending on the car its going in. Just my 2 cents..
As far as it being forged I doubt if they are. Not meant to exceed 6000 rpm so there is no need from the factory.
Are you wanting to build off one or just asking?

After reading the thread I posted I would stay away from that 8.1L as well.. heck you can even use a Gen 5 block if you can't find a Gen 6. The gaskets for mounting older/newer heads is the same cost as regular ones and it works fine.
