Default What can I do with this ole 350?

I have a fresh .060 over 350 shortblock, flat top speed pro pistons. Its an old 2pc seal motor. It will be going in an overweight 77 nova, currently has a 700r4, I have 4.10 gears but they're not in yet.

How can I make the most of what I have? I don't have a cam or heads yet. Are 12s on the motor possible?
Should I ditch the r4? Works well now and I'd like to keep the overdrive.
This car is already made of spare parts and good deals, I'd like to keep that theme going (cheap) Gotta run pump gas.
I'm thinkin solid flat tappet, 10:1 comp, aluminum heads (brand?), 3000 stall.

The car currently has a 350, home ported vortecs, .465/224 cam, stock stall, highway gears, junk edelbrock 750 carb. Runs strong but I need a bunch more.

Id keep the 700. Id get some aluminum 64 cc heads. You can run higher cr that way. Cam just depends. Id get something 1600 rpm and up for sure..

Spend your money on the heads....AFR or a set of TFS from TEA. Those VORTEC's are a decent head though but not comparable to a quality aftermarket aluminum set.

I think I remember reading that the 700R4's don't like steep rear gears....due to their 1st gear ratio?? If it's a car you plan on driving at 50+ mph for long distances frequently, I'd leave the 700R4 in there. If this is a weekend toy/strip ride that stays in town, I would consider a swap to a Th350 with a good converter from PTC matched to your combo.

Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake with a Holley 650-750DP.

Cam selection is dependent on your heads, compression, gearing, weight, etc.

I think that car weighs around 3500 lbs. I'd like to make 425fwhp at least.
I'd love to keep the overdrive, but I'm afraid i'll spend money on a stall, then burn it up.

.

You want a bunch more, but you have a 60 over stock block.
Be very careful how much more.

Good luck.

A .060 over stock block won't hold 425 hp? You think I shouldn't dump any money in it then?

I have a buddy who has a .060 over block and it hold up just fine. We figure the power to be about 530 fwhp. He has a set of Trick Flow 195cc (2.05/1.60) heads that a just cleaned up in the bowl and a good valve job, a hydraulic roller cam spec'ed by Ed Curtis in the .580 lift area. It is strictly a pump gas motor and in a 3300lb race ready weigh car goes 11.1x's all day with a 8 year old tight converter and 3.90 gear

The weak link I found in my 700R4 when I beefed up my motor (about 380 fwhp) was 2nd gear. The band was slipping pretty bad at the strip. Installed a B&M shift kit and the 2-4 servo for a 700R4 in a vette and fixed it right up (the vette 700R4 has a larger 2-4 servo piston)
