What type of gas & octane level for this SBC?

Default What type of gas & octane level for this SBC?

Hi, I just bought an old chevy hot rod truck and was hoping someone could tell me what type of gas & octane level is required for this vehicle? Also, any idea on what horsepower this motor/setup may produce and is there any unique things (i.e., precautions, must do's, etc.) I need to know about regarding this blower on a sbc?

Motor/truck specs: pro built 355, 4 bolt main block, Scat Steel Crank, Scat forged H-Beam rods, Comp Roller Cams, Crower Roller Lifter’s, 1.6 Chromolly steel Roller Rocker Arms, Magnum push rods, Air flow research 195 street/strip 74cc Aluminum heads with Stainless Steel valves, 7/16 Screw in studs. B & M 162 Super Charger 10PSI. Boost, Static Compression 12.5 to 1. Pro Built Turbo 350 transmission, Custom built shift kit with 2800 rpm stall torque converter. Three inch Mandrel bent exhaust into 3” super 40 Flow master mufflers. Narrowed Ford 9” rear end, limited slip, Currie Ent. 411 Third member, Hampton rear axles.

Are you sure about that compression? When you run forced induction you want your static compression to be lower.

That's what the former owner relayed to me. Will I experience problems if the 12.5 to 1 compression is correct? Will this motor be ok on premium pump gas or will it require race fuel?

You cant run a 12.5:1 NA (naturally aspirated) motor on pump gas. if it really does have that much compression i hope you like detonation.

Ask the previous owner for a build sheet of the motor or receipts. that will tell you what is really in your new motor.

To run that motor, you might want to think about alcohol or Nitro...LOL 10 PSI boost with 12.5:1? Not going to happen on any type of gas you can buy at the pump.

Actually he might be able to get away with e85 with that compression.

Thx for the feedback. I will check the build sheet and go through the large box of receipts to see exactly what is in the motor then will update this thread with specifics and solicit advice at that time. More to follow in a few days. Thank you gents!

I run that in my bike. It is about 100 octane or somewhere in that vicinity. I don't think I would use that in a 12.5:1 engine running 10 psi. 12.5:1 engine would be great without the boost!

There are guys using it on 11.5:1 motors on 20+ psi of boost so 12.5:1 and 10 psi should put it in the same boat.

Highest octane you can get. Need lower compression like 9:1 to boost it up
