Question Engine Advice

The motor is a 73 454. Compression is around 8.5 to 8.7 if it is still stock compression which I think it is. Whatever the cam is its tiny. It gets to about 5,000 RPM and its running out of breath. The intake right now is a Performer RPM which is overkill for the rpm I am running now. I am also running stock exhaust manifolds but Hooker competition headers are in the mail. Carb is a 600cfm edelbrock. What type of cam specs should I be looking at and what kind of carb should I be looking for? Im shooting for 6000 RPM. Oh and its a turbo 400 and a 3.55 12 bolt.

Well, before I decide on a cam, I would check to see which heads you have. If they are a normal oval port then you are in good shape.

I'm unsure when GM came up with the brilliant idea of "Peanut" ports, but even on a tow vehicle those sukk! They may have come after 73, but I would def. check.

Yeah I ran my head casting numbers and they don't suck. One article described some of the desirable factory heads and mine was one of them. They are one of the larger oval port heads. Rotating assembly is stock, probably rebuilt a little while back, it runs nice. No peanuts here, that was my biggest concerns back when I first started looking at the motor.

roller would be best but if you want hydraulic look in the 250-265@50 range about 550-570 lift with a 110-114 lsa

Wow that much cam? What type of stall converter you think I would need for that? What kind of RPM range can I expect?

Well, if you are feeding this motor at 6000 rpm, then you need to be sure it can breathe, for a driver I'd go with an 850. If mileage is an issue then a 750.

But I like big carbs, I hate to hold a motor back on cfm.
