A 505" is very common, and strong. If the block is in good shape,
I recommend going with the smallest bore possible.
I don't remember ever seeing a 3/8th stroke in a stock block,
but that still only gets you 520"
The 509" is usually made with a big bore block and 4" stroke.
I also agree, if you don't need it, don't waste ~$2000 for a race type block.
I do have a brand new 557" I'm thinking about selling. Hint Hint

This is it! Reher-Morrison's BIGGEST and BADDEST! 747ci All Aluminum 5" bore spacing MONSTER. This engine will put you up front no matter what or where you race!
This 4.750" bore, 5.250" stroke engine uses the 5" spreadport 14º CFE cylinder heads and takes the performance of the Big Block Chevrolet to the next level. It is tracked tested and Dyno proven to give consistent, reliable 1,450 Hp and 1,185 Ft/Lbs of Torque round after round.
Yeah its a BIG block.....just a Donovan Aluminum block LOL
I have allways been told to go with a larger bore and smaller stroke. This results in less friction due to a shorter stroke and a faster spinning rotating assembly. I red an article that one of Reher-Morrison's builders wrote and was talking about it. Just have to have a good ignition system to get an even and complete burn.
He also mentioned thats how the F1 guys build their engines also.

I believe it had 1550+ HP I'm actually saving up for one next year.

I've seen 737" Pro-Mod's, and some outlaw guys a little bigger,
but an 800"+ HOLY _ _ _ _
You start with the smallest bore so after spending tons of money on block prep,
you can rebuild it a few times. Obviously if you are trying to use a stock block,
money is an issue. Besides you can't even use real heads on a stock block, valves will hit and you are missing 2 head bolts. Yes big bore, small stroke is usually best in drag racing. That is why we have all switched to big bore blocks. Which is .250-.375 over a stock 4.84 block.

And i agree on staying to a 496 min. deff stroke wise. my rods had slight rubbing at the bottom of the cylinders. i just cant see going almost or .100 over without resleeving the block to touch 500ci
Steve Kirk Jr has one goin in his pro mod for next year ADRL season,I think they have been running it in his 10.5 car.
Head flow & cam will limit & make the HP.
Obviously you will have to juggle strength & power if you're on a buget.
Power only, you would pick, highest compression, roller cam & best flowing heads.
650 HP with N2O will be easy, don't skimp on rods, crank & pistons. Good Luck.
