Default Cam for GM Performance 385 Fast Burn crate motor

Two years ago my daughter installed a GM Performance 385 Fast Burn crate motor in her Monte Carlo. Now, she has decided that she absolutely has to have a GM Performance “350 Hot Cam Kit 12480002” which includes a 24502586 cam (she is expecter her daddy to do the installation work).

I have no idea if this is a good choice for her. The only cam swap I have ever done was in my LS1 but it was easy to find a ton of info on here about what cams are best suited for various situations by using the Search feature. But for her, I don’t know of a good place to get advice.

The car is NOT a daily driver. It is mostly is driven to and from the track weekly -- a distance of about 5 miles. She also drives it frequently on weekends to car shows and to local hangouts but rarely more than about 15 miles away from home and rarely on the open highway. So what she wants is fairly hot cam for the track but that is still streetable.

Any advice? Also, am I safe from needing to worry about any clearance issues or other fitment problems?

Some specs: The cam as it came from the factory is a Hydraulic Roller Cam with .474/.510 lift. Duration @ .50 = 208/221. The GM Performance Hot Cam is .525/.525 lift and duration of 218/228. LSA = 112. She is looking at the kit which also includes aluminum roller rocker arms with a 1.6: 1 ratio.

What's the compression ratio on her motor? The hot cam isn't a very big step over what she already has IMO. If it were me and compression is high enough, I'd look at something like the Comp XE282HR or something similar, especially since it's a dedicated play car.

I would suggest this cam for the application at hand:
Adv Duration 296/302
@0.050 226/234
lift is .544 with 1.6 ratio rockers
109* LSA
107* Int centerline

Some of each but probably more drag racing. I'd say she races 30 to 40 times per year.

How about an Edelbrock cam. 234/244 .488/.510 on a 112 Lsa with 1.5 rockers. I put 1.6's on mine. I have it in my 327 with fast burn heads and it preforms great. Awsome mid range and top end pulls like a ****. The bottom end isnt as great though cuz i dont have a stall and i think the heads and cam are meant for more cubic inches. That's why i am currently taking that cam and heads out the 327 and putting them in a 383stroker that i am building.

As far as I know that is a flat tappet cam and he is looking for a roller.

Default 385 fast burn gm crate engine

hello all new here was doing a search and ran into the same thing i want to do to my enine.i have the same engine in a 87 montecarlo ss and i wanted to add a hot cam kit which will put it at 425hp. but im looking for a streetable cam that will turn some heads with the chopy sound on the engine and of course the hp. some people tell me to put more duration in it if i want a chopy sound. i was looking at that hot cam my self and another cam down the list p/n 12370847 hyd roller I:234 E:242 @.050 lift I:539 E:558 lobe 112
but i dont know what horse power this will give and torque or if it will give me that chopy sound that will turn heads as soon as i pull up ??????

what does your daughter make at the track what time and what is behind the engine uto trans ?? or 6spd what gear

i have the 4.56 gear ratio and im going to put in a 6sp in it hope we can help each other out

go with a solid roller from comp. Something in the 230's in duration and about .550 lift. You will be very very pleased.

I:234 E:242 @.050 lift I:539 E:558 lobe 112 1.6 rockers
this is the gm cam i want to go with now. it will give me 465hp 410tq but now i need a set of springs that will clear perfect in the fast burn heads.
i hear that the max lift clearance is .525 on the heads. but they say i have to do some grinding on the head to be able use the 1.6 rockers and a lift of .595 or so lift. the reason why i want this cam is because Scoggin Dickey
has this cam in the zz465 same heads and block just diffrent springs but i think it has work done to the heads. anyone have an idea what springs they
have and if they did any work on the heads.???????

She's running in the 12.6's. She has a 350 transmission w/ 4.10 gears. She wants to be able tell that has a cam but not to the point of turning heads.
