go with a turbo ls1 with 317 heads and a mild cam. you will see like 25 mpg and put down over 500hp built and tuned correctly. the ls1 block will be a hell of alot better for road racing since it's aluminum too.

Whats is in the 396 now?A few bolt ons can easilly make it hp..If youre in a budget just scrounge around for a 427 crank, port the heads and get one of the newer cams in the 240+duration@.050 range.

Dude, do you have any idea about what you're talking about? Nothing worse than someone talkin out their ***, givin people advice when they dont know ****. A 396 and a 427 have the same crank. Same stroke (3.75), different bore. If ya dont know dont spout. Nothing wrong with not knowing until you start giving advice. And on top of that, with that cam recommendation, you may make some power, but you can throw the gas mileage out the window.

Whats wrong with you?I know I was think he had a 427 and was going to tell him to get a 454 crank/balancer. but its a mistake, but whats with the hostility? You dont know what I know.

here's mine that does about 10-12mpg with an old L88 cam(not the race L88)with a 700R4 on a thirdgen. Its streetable with premium gas and 11:1 compression on ported 781 heads.Ive driven the same bottom end with a Winters intake and a 292 solid cam and did about 13 or better in an 8 hour drive to Jersey city.

With good compression those cams can made to work on the street

edcmat-l1, Are you looking for a job? Cause it looks to me like your trying to interview here. Congrats on having people come from all around to have work on their stuff. For all we know you could be in the middle of nowhere and your the only one around. All the while giving absolutely NO advice to the original question. Maybe you're sticking to your own advice and not giving an opinion since you may not really know what you are talking about either?

And a 240 cam in a big block isn't really all that much.

Get some smallish AFR heads possibly 305's. The smaller heads will give you better velocity allowing a much better torque curve. These heads and a decent size cam should get you in the 500 range.

Getting an honest 500 hp out of a 396 big block is going to require a huge cam and some rpms or boost or nos.

I've got a 396 in my Chevelle bored .060 and it has a 240/246 duration cam, requires the use of a 3500 stall converter/4.10 gears, lopes big time and has enough torque to pin you to the seat from a stop light, but probably doesn't make even 450 hp.

You'd be better off running a 454 is they make 500 hp moderately. Or an LS2 stroked to 402.
