Default 396 - 427 CI Small block Chevy?

Just curious, how hard is it to stroke out a 4.030" (350+0.030) small block to a 396 or 427 besides the machining for clearance? I've heard that if you bore 0.060 over it's a little more risky due to the cylinder walls being to close to each other, is that true? I'd like to build a Gen. 1 style small block Chevy with 396 CID or more. Is the whole trick to just buy an after market block or what?

Thanks, Cody.

Just start with a 400 block and build yourself a 406 and be done with it. Relatively cheap, easy, and will makes gobs of power without any real fancy parts.

You can do a 350 with a little extra stroke over the std 383 and have a 396. 427 on a stock block is pushing it IMHO. I'd go aftermarket block to start on that cubic inch requirement.

IMHO, a 383 is a common build, the parts are easier to find and less $$ than a less-common stroke or bore. .060 is about the max I do on boring but I've had them last fine with 500+ ponies and spray on top

Is the 400 block capable of going up to 427 CID? Just curious. If so does it require a lot of special work also?

Edit: Thanks for the info Derek, we posted at the same time lol. I've seen alot of 383 LT1's n' such, I guess I'm just looking for those numbers just to say I have that much CI, I was also kinda interested in it because I don't see alot of 396-427 SBC often.

I'm sure someone has clearanced a 400 block to take a 4" crank, but I've never seen it in person. Every 427/434/454 SBC I've ever seen is using an aftermarket block.

.

If you are going to spend that much $, don't use a stock block. Race blocks are better metal, stronger bracing & bigger bore.

I wasn't really planning on spending alot of money. I guess big displacement costs big bucks? lol. I'm only building a good 350+ HP SBC (I know a 396 or 427 would give me more then that) but I am new to the whole engine crafting scene but my plan is to build a 350 HP SBC using an modified LT1 intake to get the best out of the "daily driver" title. Could anyone show me some heads (Non-Vortec) that would best fit my 350HP goal on a lower budget with a 350 (+0.030)?

I have seen 434 out of a stock 400 block

If u have the block already and only want 350 HP, I vote 383". Nothing wrong with the 355", I just like 383" for mild street cars.

Great street motors, torque to get moving and very reliable, and every part is very common now(which means cheaper). My opinion.
