Turbo for a BBC

Turbo for a BBC
I've just been passing around the idea of a single turbo big block for a 1st gen camaro. Something like a 502. Can you use the log style manifolds flipped forward like the ls1's? With a good forged bottom end, some good aluminum heads what hp could it make on 93 octane. I'm looking for good street manners. What size turbo would it take. I'm guessing somewhere in the 80mm range. Maybe even an efi setup like the accel dfi. Anyone done this, heard of it or maybe even have some pics or advice.

Go with a FAST XFI or something.
All GOOD turbo setups are customs if you ask me.
Turbo size will depend on what boost level you want and what CUI you will have.
If you want it to run on 93 then you are fairly limited. Maybe a 76mm or something.
On the good forged bottom end and good heads....... it all depends on what power you want. You could go with some nice ported pro 1 heads or all out and go to the Big Chief level of heads.
First figure out what power level you want then go from there.
Now if you ask me one day in the next few years I want to build a 5XX aluminum BBC with twin T-88's ish, race gas.

I am in the process of doing a similar setup.
I traded the 2000 Z28 Turbo shop car for a 72 Z28 roller. I am going to do a 496ci BBC with a single 91mm. I plan to keep it turned down to 15lbs of so. I wan to be able to drive it on the street some on pump gas. You dont need alot of boost on a BBC to make soem crazy power. I am doing a set of custom foward facing Turbo headers for my car. I am going to use a Blow Thru Carb also. I want something you dont see alot. No need for the big EFI systems. Its easy to make 1000+rwhp with a nice blow thru setup on a BBC.

what your planning uses a lotta cubes.. could take a fair size turbo to feed it. Decide power goals and motor size and then you can figure turbo size with that information and a couple compresser maps. It is all about CFM!
A good budget turbo i could reccomend is a s400. They are mid $500 brand new. These are pretty large turbos and can support gobs of power. But like i said.. before you just go splurge you need to figure out a few things.
And blow thru with a carb is highly reccomend too. Setup right, blow throughs are badass. But if you have the cash for this, then obviously you have cash for EFI. Just remember, injectors and what not is NOT cheap. lol.
well... a lot of people have good luck with em. To each his own. I love fuel injection a lot tho myself.

Carbs just like injected Speed Density setups require tunning in big weathers swings. Forced Inducted setups are tunned a little on the rich side for saftey sake and dont require much past seasonal changes once tunned in fully for WOT and cruise condition.

In my experience it only take 10lbs or even less to make 800+rwhp witha solid BBC. There is a local street car in town with 8lbs on a non intercooler turbo making over 800rwhp with a Blow Thru Carb setup. It is dead simple and dead nuts reliable.

When I get caught up at the shop bring me a 3rd GEN with a BBC between the fram rails and we will get a BBC setup knocked out.

Thought about it and will probably be more economical to build a 496ci. Let's shoot for about 800 hp. Also will be intercooled cause I think it's a waste to go FI and not. What would be a good entry level turbo?
My car is turning like 2800 RPM's at 60mph. But I think the gears in the tranny are not stock.....
One day I am going to go with a turbo BBC and but it in a 4th gen I think.

I personally wouldn't waste a bunch of money on EFI and an intercooler for your low power goals. Any 496 or 502, with a blow thru carb, nonintercooled should be able to make well in excess of 800hp no sweat.

Agreed, you need to figure out what power level you will be happy with. If its 8XX hp or less then I say good blow threw carb and no innercooler. This will also decide your turbo size.
Now if you want to go ***** to the wall then I say EFI or GOOD blow threw carb with a nice air to water innercooler (not a small under the hood one either).
I know a local guy that just built a 5XX BBC with wither twin T-76's or 88's sticking out of the hood, its pretty much ***** to the wall with power and a 25.1 cage.
Nice looking Firebird 1fastWS6.

How much cheaper is a blow thru than a fuel injected like a fast or big stuff. List all the parts for both pumps carb shipping to carb shop hat all the beans . I would say they are not as much diffrence as you would think.

Carb after its tuned/blueprinted well over a grand Id say but that depends on pwer level and carb size.
Big stuff 3 alone is like 2k plus injectors and sensors ect ect.
Whats nice about injections is you can dial it in a lot better and per cylinder.
