Default Double hump heads...

...always heard of them, but what is so good about them. My buddy may get a set that he found in the local paper for $125. His '71 Monte has a stock 350.

If it is that price fresh outta the machine shop it is a good deal if optimal peak power is not a issue.

good about them.... um well the two big humps on the front of the casting of coarse, lol compared to todays heads they are not anything special at all, but back in the day they were the best head to come from the factory, they had the smaller closed chambers, bigger ports and the bigger(either 1.94 or 2.02) valves. they are still worth some money at swap meets for those wanting to restore a car that originally had them.

If you have to have iron factory heads (like limited oval track car rules), they work well. Or if you are restoring and need them for authenticity.

Otherwise there are several better heads available...

.

They were fine 30+ years ago. As said, if you're not restoring something. There are dozens of better heads.
Better material, modern tech, brand new, not 40 year old technology.

how are they compared to Vortec heads?

I know vortecs require a special intake, but otherwise....

Vortec heads whip cammel hump ***, they might require a special intake but they are priced the same. They need to have slight machine work to accept over a .470 lift and new springs but the cammels did too. They outflow the cammels HEAVILY.

i wouldnt say that vortecs are better, I mean camel hump heads and vortecs are on relativly the same playing field when you want to make power. It all depends what is available to you. 125 is a steal if there is nothing wrong with the heads, buy them and enjoy that 60 year old technology at at its best.

The Vortecs will likely make 30HP more than the old school Camelbacks on the same engine.
But for $125, they sound like a decent deal IF they are good heads that were rebuilt properly, and if they have not been decked a million times.
It's just like buying any used engine part, the longer the part has been in service the more people that have had their hands on it along the way to possibly screw it up.
If budget is a priority over power, then go for it.
If you plan on pushing the combo over 400hp, then hold out for better heads.

camel humps can still make good power on a budget. They are like others said nothing compared to todays technology...but if you want a solid 350-400hp on a budget...you can get by with camel humps. Hell I got 2 or 3 pairs in the shop just sitting.

If you had 2 or 3 pair of vortecs they would be sold probably. The only problems with the vortecs is the thin casting, it is hard to find a set of non cracked vortecs for some reason.

I love some camel hump heads but... a set of Vortecs will out do a good ported set of Camel's any day of the week (sad to say!!)

If you dont buy them just let me know... I'll take them off of his hands (PS they usually dont last very long)

BTW, the ONLY set of old *** heads that slow better than vortecs from GM ported didnt even come stock, they were the heads i just fucked up on my motor, the 292 heads, they have GUDE amounts of material for porting and can flow WAY past 6000 RPM, i was shifting at 6400 in a 383, vortecs would run out of gas after 6k on a stroker.
