Default LS1 Rebuild HELP!!!

I have a 2002 Camaro SS and I want to rebuild the engine. It has a little over 125,000 miles on it and I am pretty sure it is about that time. I also want to put some aftermarket parts on it, such as a camshaft, manifold, and those trick flow heads that are always in the summit catalog. I don't know much about deep, internal engine components and I am wondering what all I have to do or change on the car to do this. I am considering to let someone with experience do this. How much should a rebuild with aftermarket parts cost?? Also, should I consider a bigger rear end to handle the new power and perhaps a new transmission?? Cause I am looking to at least get over a 500 hp after the rebuild.

Thanks

500rwhp with a stock cube LS1 is not going to happen.

cost depends on parts. there are just tons of variables. stock crank? stock rods? stock pistons?

I will be glad to give you a price on any parts you want, just give me a call. Trick flow heads are definately a good choice. There are some other really good choices out there as well.

If you are wanting to go with a FAST intake, I can get you a great deal on that, and a throttle body.

Feel free to call me if you want to discuss further in depth.

thanks
Jeff

125k is not really a lot of miles.

I know a guy that bought a '98 Trans Am with 160k added a Hotcam, headers, lid,pulley,tru-duals, and a tune. Then lowered it, added wheels and a WS6 hood and it was bad ***. He daily drive it for a couple years and sold it with 190k+ and it was just strong as a 50k mile car with the same mods.

On the corvetteforum there are c5 guys with 200,300, and I just saw an odometer pic with 400k miles! Original engine, of course with lots of other parts/sensors on the cars replaced over time.

Don't waste money on a rebuild just yet, just mod it with used go fast parts on a budget and enjoy 420ish rwhp.

It sounds to me like you need to decide what your goals are and go from there.

I assumed several things. I assumed he was going to drive this vehicle daily. I assumed he wanted to keep compression at a reasonable level. I assumed he didnt want a monster cam in it that would want to surge or die when he turned on the AC. And yes, I assumed he meant RWHP.

Sorry for my assumptions.

There are probably ways to get 500hp out of a mazda miata too....but if someone made that claim, I would again say its not going to happen.

We have built and tuned enough combos at our shop to know its not common place. But you found two instances where its been done with huge cams and massive compression, so I withdraw my statement. Here is my revised comment.

500rwhp with a stock cube LS1 isnt likely to happen. It will cost serious money and not likely be something you would enjoy driving on the street.

P.S. I would also assume the OP wouldnt want a similar scenario of the first link you posted. Post #68 to be exact. I would hope everyone could agree that 500hp for a few pulls on the dyno doesnt mean squat if the combo wont stay together for real world driving.

Far too many assumptions being made in this thread. If the OP would be more clear then the assumptions could be avoided.

Not really true. I made a little over 500rwhp with a stock motor, just added headers, converter, and a Vortech with 10lbs. of boost. This was my daily driver. Actually one of the best cars I have had.LOL!

Lots of folks jumping to assumptions here

To the original poster, do not set your sights on these "internet" cars that make 500rwhp. Trust me they're few and far between, and usually every trick in the book is used to get a 346 to make it. Not too mention, a LOT of money spent on ALL the best parts money can buy for a 3.9 bore.

If you want that kind of power, and you plan on doing a rebuild a very mild forced induction setup might not be a bad idea. It'll cost about the same as trying to build a max effort 346 motor, and the car will be faster. A basic rebuild with forged pistons, stock rods, stock crank, mild stage 1 CNC job on your stock heads, mild blower cam, stock LS6 intake and 10 psi. It'll make 500+ rwhp all day long and be reliable.
